are the calling cards of the Grand Hotel Santa Lucia, built in the early 1900s near the port of the same name. An Art Nouveau hotel attributed to the famous architect Comencini. Its hard to resist its fascination, the insistent pull of a spectacle that spans half the horizon. A panorama that from the windows of the Santa Lucia affords views of Vesuvius and the entire Bay of Naples, Capri and Ischia, with in the foreground the majestic Castel dellOvo. A refuge beloved by personages of every period, who in the intimacy of its rooms have found the inspiration for unforgettable works. Lulled by the waves and seduced by the magic of a Naples that seems to hover between sea and sky. The hotel is in the centre of the city yet right on the shore, directly in front of the ancient fishing village of Borgo Marinari. The major sights of Naples are within easy walking distance and the beautiful harbour is just metres away. Capodichino International Airport is 20 minutes (20 kms) by ta

Santa Luzia is a quiet fishing village on the Ria Formosa, separated from the long sandy beach by a shallow lagoon that opens out to the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing boats and a ferry use this as a harbour. The long sandy beach called Barril beach is easily accessible by either foot, a 15 minute walk or by a small tourist train, (1 euro I think. cars are not allowed. This is a blue flag beech. . When we went at Easter the town and beach was very quiet. One day we walked onto the sand dunes behind the beach and then along the beach. There were a lot of resident and migrant birds, terns, ducks, and wader's. The Ria Formosa is a recognised UN nature reserve, it stretches from west of Faro to the Ilha de Tavira in the east. Walking along the beach we saw many ships out at sea. The beach would I think be a haven for children so much clean sand to dig wide expanses of sand to play ball on . Topless and I think even nude bathing is allowed on this beach but at Easter it was a little chilly for this activity. When we got back near the little train station we stopped for a drink at the restaurant there are toilets there and first aid facilities before we walked back to the town.
Along the water front there are a few restaurants we looked at these to spot ones that took our fancy for an evening meal. All the restaurants /café's bars seemed to not be serving English breakfasts, there were no high rise apartments and hotels all were low rise 3 or 4 floors high at maximum. We soon got to the landing area for the ferry. That was opposite our apartment, we walked a little bit further to the end of the houses where the road went round the corner and towards Tavira. There was a small child's play park a couple of swings. Our flat very near this we walked past the bar on the corner to our apartment.
The next morning we walked along the few streets behind the sea front there were a couple of small provision shops, bakers or two and one or two other shops. We could have bought our supplies for the week there but there was little choice, we did buy bread and cheese some cold meats and out milk there. When we arrived in Portugal we went to a large supermarket on the way to Santa Luzia buying all the supplies for the week. We intended to eat out a few times too. I have been visiting Santa Luzia for more than 5 years now and enjoy the village so much that in august of 2006 i purchased a small house in rua Joao antonio chagas ferriera.
It is opposite the best little seafood restaurant in the algarve "Alcatruz". The fish in this place is so fresh it is still wriggling and the algarvean speciality of seafood and rice "arroz marisco" is unsurpassed in even the swankiest of restaurants.
The new promenade is ... ...out of season.
In august santa luzia is very popular with potrtuguese tourists, expect a long wait at any restaurant unless pre-booked.
Restaurant O mourao serves a 3 course lunch complete with wine and coffee for just7 euros.
There are a couple of late night bars notably meia pippa which boasts live music most weekends and Mundo run by a lovley scottish couple emma and fergus.
Ther is an excellent B&B casa da Ria run by Jorge and Tensi Hermann ...

Advantages: Excellent value for money and extremely clean and tidy Disadvantages: Slightly to far to be able to walk to city centre
season, it looked like nearly all of the hotels were full and in the ones that had vacancies, the hotel rooms were very expensive. Luckily, one of the hotels recommended the Hotel SantaLucia on the outskirts of the city. At first, we thought it would not be good as we didn?t really want to stay on the outskirts as we would have preferred one in the centre so that we could visit all the attractions on foot without having to rely on the car, but as we could not find anything central, we decided to go to the Hotel SantaLucia.

Advantages: Some lovely rooms, great location and verty reasonable price. Disadvantages: Not all rooms as nice, noisy air-con.
Plaza, meaning it is close to restaurants, bars, internet cafes and shops as well as the smaller, but pleasant SantaLucia Plaza. The airport is just outside town, and takes about 15 minutes by taxi. The bus terminal is a five minute taxi ride away.
We arrived late at night, so I didn?t really get the feel for the hotel until the morning, where it turned out to be a more attractive hotel than I realised. Most of the rooms assigned to my traveling companions overlooked a pretty little plant filled courtyard or the pool. My room overlooked a corridor! This, of course, hindered the natural light in the room as there was no other window other than a tiny one in the bathroom. The room was simply furnished with a tiled floor, solid beds (one single and one double) with wooden frames, a bedside table, desk, TV and some open shelves ...
Advantages: Great historic place to visit Disadvantages: None I can think of
There are many wonderful, and awe inspiring places to visit in and around Naples, this Castle is just one of those places. I've always had a love of castles and old house, the fact this was here seemed to good an opportunity to miss out on.
*** What is it? ***
The Castel Dell'Ovo is apparently the oldest castle in Naples, having had many guises throughout the years, it is now a fantastic place to visit.
*** Where is it? ***
The Castle sits on a promontory of land, a small islet, jutting out from the main coastal road in the heart of the Bay of Naples. It is located on Via Partenope, and Via N. Sauro, in the SantaLucia district, it separates the harbour area in the slightly upmarket sea front areas.
As a landmark it is fantastic, if you walk away from the castle, on the promenade, you will soon be rewarded ...
