Santa Luzia is the fishingvillage in Portugal that we stayed in at Easter. We flew from Luton to Faro picked up our rental car and drove the 25 k to Santa Luzia. Santa Luzia is near Tavira. Santa Luzia is only about 30k from the Spanish border.
Santa Luzia is a quiet fishing village on the Ria Formosa, separated from the long sandy beach by a shallow lagoon that opens out to the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing boats and a ferry use this as a harbour. The long sandy beach called Barril beach is easily accessible by either foot, a 15 minute walk or by a small tourist train, (1 euro I think. cars are not allowed. This is a blue flag beech. . When we went at Easter the town and beach was very quiet. One day we walked onto the sand dunes behind the beach and then along the beach. There were a lot of resident and migrant birds, terns, ducks, and wader's. The Ria Formosa is a recognised UN nature reserve, it stretches from west of Faro to the Ilha de Tavira in the east. Walking along the beach we saw many ships out at sea. The beach would I think be a haven for children so much clean sand to dig wide expanses of sand to play ball on . Topless and I think even nude bathing is allowed on this beach but at Easter it was a little chilly for this activity. When we got back near the little train station we stopped for a drink at the restaurant there are toilets there and first aid facilities before we walked back to the town.
Along the water front there are a few restaurants we looked at these to spot ones that took our fancy for an evening meal. All the restaurants /café's bars seemed to not be serving English breakfasts, there were no high rise apartments and hotels all were low rise 3 or 4 floors high at maximum. We soon got to the landing area for the ferry. That was opposite our apartment, we walked a little bit further to the end of the houses where the road went round the corner and towards Tavira. There was a small child's play park a couple of swings. Our flat very near this we walked past the bar on the corner to our apartment.
The next morning we walked along the few streets behind the sea front there were a couple of small provision shops, bakers or two and one or two other shops. We could have bought our supplies for the week there but there was little choice, we did buy bread and cheese some cold meats and out milk there. When we arrived in Portugal we went to a large supermarket on the way to Santa Luzia buying all the supplies for the week. We intended to eat out a few times too. We enjoyed our holiday using this quiet fishing village. We had a few nice meals out in the restaurants, watched the fishermen in their boats from our apartment balcony. We visited the town of Tavira and walked in the countryside. It is a place I might return to but there are so many other places to explore I doubt I ever will
