I have been visiting Santa Luzia for more than 5 years now and enjoy the village so much that in august of 2006 i purchased a small house in rua Joao antonio chagas ferriera. It is opposite the best little seafood restaurant in the algarve "Alcatruz". The fish in this place is so fresh it is still wriggling and the algarvean speciality of seafood and rice "arroz marisco" is unsurpassed in even the swankiest of restaurants. The new promenade is half comleted (june 2007) and is due to be finished in the coming winter. Everything you need can be found in the many little local shops and cafe de ville in the church square provides daily fresh baked bread. You will not find english breakfast, beer or even cigarettes in the village though you can obtain english newspapers from about 11am onwards at the kiosk on the front in season and from the small newsagents in the back streets out of season. In august santa luzia is very popular with potrtuguese tourists, expect a long wait at any restaurant unless pre-booked. Restaurant O mourao serves a 3 course lunch complete with wine and coffee for just7 euros. There are a couple of late night bars notably meia pippa which boasts live music most weekends and Mundo run by a lovley scottish couple emma and fergus. Ther is an excellent B&B casa da Ria run by Jorge and Tensi Hermann where I have stayed many times prior to my property purchase and apartments to rent are plentiful but again it is essential to pre-book in august. A short ride on the ferry or a 1 euro ride on the mini train up at Pedras Del Rei takes you over to the Isle de tavira or Barril beaches. Over 11kms of soft clean sand to rival anything I have ever seen in the Carribean plus wildlife galore in the marshy environs of the ria formosa nature reserve. On returning to Santa Luzia by ferry a call into Casa de Polvo right opposite the jetty to sample the octopus salad will help you understand why Santa Luzia is "Capital de Polvo". Time is very unimportant in Santa Luzia, stay there and you will be amazed where the days go. www.santaluzia-portugal.blogspot.com
