How can I explain you Santa Margherita Ligure? You can find this city in the region of Liguria, close to Genova. It's not a big town, but it's a lovely place. When you see the town from the sea, it looks like a painting, because in the years nothing is changed. The town belong to the international jet set with others towns like: Porofino (very close to Santa Margherita Ligure), Capri, Amalfi, Taormina, Montecarlo, Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo, Saint Tropez and more. Santa Margherita Ligure is situated on the Levant Coast of the Liguria, at orients of the town you will find Portofino's Cape. Santa Margherita was built in the inner part of the Gulf of the Tigullio. The town is encircled from covered hills of Mediterranean vegetation and the coast is called the Coast of the Dolphins, that it joins the city to Portofino too. There are no great beaches, because there is the sea and the hills. If you want to go there, please not in the week ends and in August because you will find to much people. Very good is in spring time and in autumn. The winter climate is great because during the day is not cold. For arrive there it depends from where you are coming:
1.From Milan you have to take the heighway to Genova and from there direction Livorno and go out at Rapallo's highway station. 2.From Genova, direction Livorno go out in Rapallo. 3.From Tuscany, direction north/Livorno-Genova and always go out in Rapallo
A little bit of history......why not?
The discovery of a urn of III the century d.C with a Latin registration (today conserved in Santa Margherita Ligure's basilica/big church) has confirmed the hypothesis, however not demonstrated, officially, of a takeover in roman age. From the Middle Ages the town was cut in two parts: Pescino (fisher) and Corte. The two parts had always small fights. In this way, for stop all this, the town goes under Rapallo until 1797 when the two parts obtained own administrations. 1813, under Napoleone Bonaparte, Pescino and Corte, came unified with the name of Porto Napoleone, since 1815 when with the annexation of the Liguria to the Reign of Sardinia, it's changed the name in Santa Margherita. The final name 1863 with a decree of King Vittorio Emanuele II. After the Second World War Santa Margherita Ligure (called the Pearl of the Tigullio), Portofino and the splendid village of Paraggi, became exclusive and rich tourist localities of an extraordinary fascination until our days.
As you can see, this place has a long history. Now you can find shops like: Dolce&Gabbana, La Perla, Loropiana and more. It's a very exclusive town with a lot of restaurants and pubs, but not with a hugh night life. The There is an aerea with nice pubs that they close late, Please, go at the Master and try their Rossini and Bellini. I prefer the Rossini. There are two disco. One in Paraggi, called Carillon, on the way to Portofino. If you go by car, you have to go early to find the parking, because you will find big parking problems. The other disco, called Covo di Nord Est, always on the way to Portofino, but closer to Santa Margherita , it's possible to go there walking. It's a nice walk on the sea. The Covo during the day works also as beach. There is a wonderful American Bar - Capo Nord. It's more or less 1 km after the Covo di Nord Est. It's a really romantic place where you can enjoy your drinks seatting in front of the sea. It's possible to rent it for private parties. A friend of mine did her birthday party there. We had a great time. Another nice American Bar you will find it on the harbour, it's called Tortuga. It's a chich place where you can see nice boats. Close at the Tortuga, you will find the restaurant Skipper. I don't know who of you know it, but in this restaurant has been done the Martini's pubblicity with Charlize Theron. For the beaches is much more better go behind the harbour, where you can find free beaches, at payment and a beach for dogs. Concerning the restaurants you can find many. You have to tast Liguria's specialities:
-gnocchi al pesto -pansotti al sugo di noci -trofie al pesto -pesce (fish) alla ligure -foccaccia: normal or with chees -mushrooms and potatos cooked in the oven
If you want a very good ice cream: Bar Gelateria Vittoria. You will find it on the entrance of the town. For me the best tastes are: Gianduia, Panera, Cioccolata, Cream.
This area is often used for movie, shootings and advertisings:
1961 Come September: Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida and Sandra Dee. This movie for most part, was done in Santa Margherita and not in Portofino. The dancing part, was done at the Covo di Nord Est. Other productions were Love Boat, Beautiful and more....and more...and more ;-D
Advantages: It's gorgeous! Disadvantages: A bit unclean
boat or foot during the day. During the summer, it is almost always necessary to book in advance. Words are not adequate to describe the charm of Camogli. Its fame is due to its picturesque qualities with painted boats and its good location by the sea. Places to stay here include the Il Cenobio dei Dogi and Casmona. Portofino is a favourite with some of the most prestigious yachts in the world and is an exclusive tourist destination. It has a well looked after bay with distinctively painted and decorated houses. Good hotels here are the Splendido and the Piccolo Hotel. One of the most important tourist areas here is SantaMargheritaLigure. The coast has an array of beaches, from the rocky San Michele di Pagana, to the sandy bay of Paraggi, where visitors come to bathe, see a variety of marine life and a shipwreck. The Hotel Paraggi is found ...
