Advantages: Great hotel catering for both families and couples
Disadvantages: Don't mention the war :)

In the past my wife and I have been pretty relaxed about where and how we holiday. We've done all inclusive, B&B, Half Board, City Breaks, Beach Holidays, make it up as we go along etc. However we now have a 5-year-old boy to look after and so our holidays have to be thought through in advance. This year we chose Fuerteventura as our holiday destination and chose the Monica Beach Hotel on the recommendation of our travel agent because of its reputation as a nice family orientated hotel. The trip from Birmingham Airport takes about 4 to 4 1/2 hours. I'm not going to talk about the flight since different airlines will offer a different standard of service. Travelodge, Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica.

Advantages: Price
Disadvantages: nothing outstanding.

I was totally lost when researching accommodation options for a couple of days in Los Angeles. I was leaning toward Santa Monica but most places close to the beach were charging far too much for my budget, this was when I happened upon the Travelodge on Pico, $59 for a double , breakfast inclusive sounded just the ticket. I booked over the net on the Travelodge website so that was easy. We arrived around 9am after a 13 hour flight and aware that i looked like death warmed up, bloodshot eyes and dog tired. Even though our booked non-smoking room was not available, the guy at the desk offered us a room then and there ... it was not non-smoking but we gladly took it. Advantages: Beautiful views of the pacific ocean and surrounding neighbourhoods
Disadvantages: Can get busy in summer

When I think of Santa Monica, it's all about the beaches (yes, where they filmed Baywatch apparently) and the pier. To give you some idea of it's importance amongst locals, this pier was built in 1909. Now, at the risk of sounding patronising, most Americans' won't have seen many buildings of this age before. That's because Santa Monica is one of the neighbourhood's in Los Angeles and Los Angeles is all about the here and now, not the long forgotton. So to them, this pier is heritage, and just about as good as that gets! Also, an important fact worth mentioning is that the historical Route 66, made famous by the Rolling Stones, ends just in front of the Pier.
