To give you some idea of it's importance amongst locals, this pier was built in 1909. Now, at the risk of sounding patronising, most Americans' won't have seen many buildings of this age before. That's because Santa Monica is one of the neighbourhood's in Los Angeles and Los Angeles is all about the here and now, not the long forgotton. So to them, this pier is heritage, and just about as good as that gets!
Also, an important fact worth mentioning is that the historical Route 66, made famous by the Rolling Stones, ends just in front of the Pier. Santa Monica Boulevard as it's more commonly known, turns into the busy Santa Monica Freeway and stops virtually right in front of the Pier. When it comes to american culture, what more could you want?
When you walk onto the Pier, the first building you come to is called the Hippodrome Carousel Building, and in here you will find the oldest carousel in the States, dating from 1922. Walk to the end of the pier beyond the usual touristy tatt and you'll come to the big wheel, or Ferris Wheel as the American's call it. We had a ride up in this, and some of the photos I took looking up and down the beach are included in the review. Look North, as in the first photo, and beyond the headland is Malibu, one of the more exclusive enclaves of LA.
Santa Monica Pier is supposedly one of the best locations in LA for watching the sun setting, but unfortunately we weren't there at nightime, we were too busy tucking into our dinners back at a Third Street Promenade Italian restaurant.
If you come by car, you can park on the pier itself at a cost of $8, but we chose to park along the seafront and walk to it.
It's definitely worth a visit if you ever find yourself here.
Hope you've found this useful.
Rachael.
PS- Just found out that because I haven't yet got 'green' status I can't upload any photo's. Will do so, when I finally get there!
Advantages: Location, Standard, Price Disadvantages: Little privacy but only what you would expect in a Hostel
of information on trips, places of interest, sightseeing tours and general information around the area of SantaMonica. There were also payphones in the foyer, generally in use very often. The Hostel also use key cards for safety, which you need to enter anywhere after the reception.
I had been a little too keen to get to SantaMonica, I arrived 3 hours before my bed was ready. The staff were very friendly though and I checked my bag into their store and went to look around SantaMonica. To be fair, SantaMonica is a relatively small area so everywhere was within walking distance. Several blocks east of the hostel there was a supermarket, about 2 blocks west there was Ocean Avenue overlooking the ocean. Then about 1 minute walk south you come to the pier approach. SantaMonicapier is practically a town of it's own, hosting restaurants and many ...
Advantages: Learn the hotspots in LA and brush shoulders with your Hollywood infatuations and you get to be the envy of all your friends Disadvantages: Relying on Luck and Film Premiers
tickets to see a show, I went to see the Chris Wylde Show and to my surprise my friends childhood hero was on, Adam West. Be warned, tv studios are freezing cold so take a sweater.
- Rodeo Drive at the heart of the shopping area where you find shops like Cartier and the worlds finest houtre couture holds great possiblities for celeb spotting.
- Malibu, hire a bike from SantaMonicaPier and cycle along the coast and you never know who you might see jogging with their pet pooch.
Its all fun and games really but on the trail on celeb hunting you see and alot more of LA's potential ...
Advantages: all year round climate {except for this year 2005} Disadvantages: first impressions were a bit iffy to say the least
appear to cause no problem, infact many seem to be artists of some sort selling their pictures on make do easels.
Not overly impressed,we were not expecting this,we headed off to the world famous SantaMonicapier which has featured in many tv/movies.
Again I stress they had suffered some severe weather {it rained}
and the place looked a bit weather beaten and in need of a lick of paint.
The pier itself was not unlike many other piers I have seen, lots of cafes, fast food outlets,cotton- candy sellers, a smell of fish.
The pier boasts a large amusement park a very fine Mexican restaurant and its own police station. A lot of iffy charecters selling allsorts physics,palm-readers,acrobats and Michael
Jackson inpersonators.
We walked to the end of the pier and were amazed to see so many anglers with quite large catch's.
Agian not quite what ...
