we went self catering last year at the end of may £101 each last minute best money spent on holiday yet,just as the season was beginning so it was very quite,which was great as perissa beach is where apart from the family holiday makers its a haven for backpackers the place though is fantastic,we drank in the local bars one of which had a pool table and only closed when the last person left,it wasnt busy but the atmosphere was great. we hired a cheap for 2 days at a very cheap rate off a garage in town loads cheaper than through the rep driving on santorini was spectacular and you drive round the whole island in a few hours but there are lots of places to see. santorini only gets expensive when you go to a place called IA at the north definately aimed at the us market but the views are magnificent. round perissa food and drinks were reasonable a meal for 2 with wine was about £10 for a good one at that some places even less,breakfast we used to have a giro,which is similar to kebab but has chips and allsorts in it,but really tasty and filling,plenty of supermarkets where local food was very cheap of course international labels were a bit more,we were getting fresh bread for about 20p butter and cheese 50p if you wanted to go and ate in your accomodation then you could spend less than £40 for 2 in a week. there is a lot of history on the island even though it is small and you can book allsorts of trips but as with all holidays shop around the reps are all on commisions which ups there prices. must see is the volcano but this can be a hard trip if you are not fit as includes some steep hard walking. dont pay to go on a sunset trip its best seen sitting on a bar terrace with a £1 cocktail in your hand.

last time I was there, the damned place blew up, still that was 1300BC, and volcanos are always a bit tricky to judge, Im older than I look....nice review..Dave
