Cruise ship sail into the caldera; so that the passengers can marvel at the dramatic rock formations that have been formed there and so that the cruise liners guests can visit Ia (Oia). Tourists from all over the world visit the volcano Nea Kameni which is a national geological park. They are taken there from Thira port, Santorini and trek up the slopes of the volcano and to look at different rock formations formed from the larva flows. The last time Nea Kameni erupted was in 1950, no predictions are given as to when the next eruption will be.
You get to Nea Kameni on a boat trip and are taken to the port to catch the boat on a coach, you book this trip at your holiday resort there are booking offices in most holiday resorts which will give you details of the trip and make the booking for the boat for you. This method of booking is often cheaper than booking with your tour company, who will tell you about trips out while you are at a welcome meeting.
What is the experience of walking on a volcano like? Different... from any other holiday experience; you need to be protected from the sun with sun cream a hat and something to cover your shoulders there is absolutely no shade on the walk.
The boat will drop you at the start of the walk and you need to remember which boat you came on as several will be tied up near yours. You then head off up the slope following the other tourists walking up the path of Nea Kameni. You have no choice but to take the walk slowly because of the heat and the other tourists. You will have time to walk up the volcano and look around and walk back down before your boat departs. The heat in august was almost breath taking and I would not recommend this trip for small children or the frail. You need to plan your trip so that you take drinking water with you although most of the boats sell refreshments,
The other thing you need to plan is the shoes you will wear; I saw some people tackle the walk in flip flops but I must say that I thought this is foolish as I felt safer with proper trek sandals on. Even so in places the shale path sort of slips and rolls away under your feet a bit so you need to tread carefully.
Would I recommend it - yes it is a great experience and if I go back to Santorini I would go back and visit Nea Kameni.
