This restaurant should not be taken too seriously. With plush velvet interiors, boxes raised up to the ceiling and waiters in fancy dress it is as much about the post-theatre event and carrying on the fun as the food. The atmosphere is rowdy, bordering on boistrous but is great for large groups and parties.
The menu runs through standard kebab type fayre, served in reasonable portions and usually on a bed of rice. I had great humous and dips followed by an ok chicken kebab with salty rice. The wine list isn't great, with a few ok choices. Overall I thought the food alone was overpriced but you are obviously paying for the experience and also the location as much as anything.
Located in the heart of Covent Garden and open until late, Sarastro is the perfect pre or post theatre stop off. The prices are as you would expect for this part of town and the restuarant knows it can keep packing them in, so the standard of food is variable and can be sub-standard. Nevertheless I would still recommend this as a London experience which you must try at least once!
