Advantages: Great location for the beginner, right through to the advanced skiers. Plenty of drinking holes and eateries. Disadvantages: 1.75Hr Coach travel from airport to the resort not very nice, given the road conditions (snow) and the sheer cliffs the roads pass by :/

Ignore what the press say about this place, it's a great place to stay for a week or two skiing some of the best runs along the Milky Way. Don't knock it until you've tried it! I have, and loved the place. Sauze D'oulx used to have the association with British lager louts frequenting the many bar's Sauze has to offer... Things have changed, for the better!!

Paddy McGinty's bar seems the most popular place to spend evenings if you're not the total party animal you'd need to be to spend evenings in other bars/clubs... Very friendly place, they also serve *real* beer there too - I seem to remember (on one rather hazy night) consuming copious amounts of Caffreys... :/

Sauze D'oulx is linked to the rest of the Milky Way by a huge series of lifts (2 or 4 man chair lifts, button lifts and the odd gondola here and there), and is very easy to get to Sestriere and Sansicaro runs without too much trouble for the intermediate skier.
Overal an excellent place to learn to ski with plenty of offer off piste!
Advantages: A great place to ski Disadvantages: There isnt enough time in the day to ski
Sauze D'oulx is one of the best places to stay in Italy if you want to use your £100 ski pass to a full. You can ski the vast milky way from Italy right into France, but this can only be done when all the pistes are in good condition and the weather is right.

Advantages: Quieter than French resorts. Disadvantages: Not a great record for snow.
I've done a lot of skiing over the years, but mainly in France. This year we decided to opt for Italy instead. Sestriere is one of the higher Italian resorts, so we chose it to try and maximize our chances of good snow.
It's based in an area called the Milky Way, which comprises Sestriere, Sauzed'Oulx, Sansicario, Claviere and Montgenevre. You can buy lift passes for each individual area, or a pass that includes all the Italian areas (everywhere except Montgenevre, which costs an additional premium).
The town of Sestriere is not picturesque, but functional. It is improving all the time as they will be hosting many events for the Winter Olympics, Turin 2006. There is a variety of accommodation, from self-catering apartments to very nice hotels. I know at least one hotel was very nice indeed because we had friends staying there ...

Advantages: Vast Ski Area, New pass system, Value for money Disadvantages: Not snow sure, Gets very busy at w'ends
No, it not that milky white choclate bar that I still enjoy. I'm refering to the Ski area that covers the Sestriere and Sauze'doulx resorts.
The area is big, around 400km of piste to cover, which even takes you into france, if you can bare the long lift journeys in between. The skiing in the area is also very expansive with plenty of runs to test advanced down to beginer level. But it is at the intermediate skiier that the milky way is aimed at, with more red runs than you could shake a stick at.
However after going there twice now, and staying in sauzed'oulz both times it has to be said that the runs are a little over rated, most of the blacks are like steep red runs and some red runs are blue runs realy. Another thing to watch out for is the snow record for this place, I'd strongly advise not to book up until you have seen ...

Advantages: Quiet Skiing amongst scenic mountains Disadvantages: outdated lift system
Bardonecheccia a good size working town up near the french border approx 1hour from Turin.Stayed in the three star DeGeney Hotel in the middle of town, wonderful food, served not buffets, comfortable and clean just a pain wlking down to the ski bus stop (100yds) but stored skis/boots at the ski hire shop at campo smith.
Skiing is in two area which are only connected by the very efficient ski bus's. The larger area is Campo Smith to Melezet, good tree lined pistes(almost deserted during the week),wide slopes suitable for intermediated/begineers with not too many challenging pistes around, good off-piste amongst the trees. At the top of the Colomion there is a wonderful small bar run by an ex Crystal rep Rachael who serves hot wine, sandwiches and hot chocolate with rum. Views over to SauzeD'oulx before trying the the Olympic(2006) run ...
