Advantages: Local good food and wine. Disadvantages: Only went one night.

Upon what was its glory based? How did it's empire collapse? and what today remains of the magnificience of venice? for you all who are planning to visit this historic city, a brief history of it might help you.
** AN INHOSPITABLE SITE**
Venice, situated in the midst of a lagoon at the northwest end of the adriatic sea, links together 118 islands. Rivers that flows into the sea nearby discharge large quantities of silt into shallow coastal waters. The play aof tides and currents here has letd to the formation of a chain of sandbars enclosing a placid lagoon that is some 51 kilometers long andup to 14...

After much searching around for a reasonably priced hotel in Venice, we stumbled upon this one, advertised as a 4-star hotel in a deal that was less than the price of most of the three star hotels.
Arriving in venice via a train from Rome, there was more
Firstly the photos of the hotel and room are quite deceptive; the Carlton Grand Canal Hotel is a crummy looking hotel with tiny rooms but apparently this is to be expected in Venice- it is also useful to note that there are many dilapidated looking... more
