SAS introduced a new fares system. It meant that from 31/10/2004 everyone other than Business and Economy Flex on European short-haul has to buy their food and drinks.
So firstly check if your ticket includes food, otherwise if you’re hungry or thirsty you have to pay.
They only accept cash, but they do accept 6 different currencies!
The thing is, the real cost to you in sterling seems to vary depending on what currency you use.
I went online and got some exchange rates today (22/02/2005), and used them to calculate in £ terms what the cost would be for a likely example, like rushing to the plane and not having time for breakfast.
So here are the prices for their breakfast bag (only available until 09:30a.m.) and a coffee:
UK £’s 5 + 2 = £7 US $ 7 + 3 = $10 Equivalent to £5.23 Euro’s € 5 + 2 = € 7 Equivalent to £4.83 Swedish SEK’s 50 + 20 = 70 SEK Equivalent to £5.32 Danish DKK’s 50 + 20 = 70 DKK Equivalent to £5.89 Norway NOK’s 50 + 20 = 70 NOK Equivalent to £6.51
You can look up the current prices for all the ‘Buy on board – Menu’ items on the main SAS website www.scandinavian.net
The price differences are probably a mixture of rounding to make it easier for cabin crew, and exchange rates varying since prices were originally thought of.
If I got my maths right, currently it's worth paying in Euro’s or $’s if you’ve got any left from your last holiday. But exchange rates sometimes change quickly.
Think about getting some currency as well as travellers cheque’s if you’re travelling to & from Scandinavia, especially if you’re travelling as a group. (Finland uses Euro’s).
It’s a good means of using up odds and ends of foreign currency too!
Only accepting cash, it's good that they accept so many currencies.

Not had enough flights since the change to check out the quality of the food, it looks OK. Only tried the coffee so far(Ciao make you tick a box for food quality).
This reviews calculations will become out of date due to exchange rate changes, also SAS will probably review their menu and prices at some point.
Hopefully I’ve got my maths about right!

You obviously use SAS a lot, so maybe you could give a full review? The info on the menus is definitely useful and it sounds like you can save a lot by being careful with your currency.

Advantages: Competitive prices, plenty of destinations, good service Disadvantages: You have to pay for food and drink on board - but that's almost standard nowadays...
