Northern Diving

Advantages: Loads of wrecks, varied and interesting diving on offer
Disadvantages: Cold, far north

As I live in Shetland and also visit Orkney when the chance arises, I’ve written an opinion mainly about the diving in both groups of islands. As a bit of background I’ve done about 130 dives in Shetland and 30 in Orkney. There’s also some tourist information at the end, because most people wouldn’t come this far purely to dive. The diving up here on the edge of the map is fantastic, and there's plenty to see and do as well, ...

THE DIVING - SHETLAND

Shetland, if you weren’t aware, is situated to the extreme far north of Scotland, 50 miles to the North of Orkney. Although the mainland is only 70 miles long, it has about a thousand of miles of coastline, due to the number of Voes (mini fjords) and smaller islands, over 100 in total. Scotland - Padi Navigation Speciality Course

Advantages: Navigational skills can help avoid long surface swims
Disadvantages: None

...the more challenging waters of Scotland as we dive there more often. We booked the course with The Dive Initiative, our local dive school in Glasgow. Prior to doing the open water exercises we completed the Padi Navigation workbook reviews which outline all the skills you need to complete the course, as well as valuable information about how to perform them. The course consists of 3 dives which can all be completed in one day. Our instructor, Ian, ...
...Fyne known as the 'Tea Rooms' which is just about 10 minutes north of Inverary. It is a beautiful site with a small pebble beach gently sloping down to the water. On the first dive we recapped on some of the tasks we had completed for our Advanced Open Water such as navigating a square with a compass and swimming a reciprical heading using natural navigation. We also had to count our kick cycles and time them while swimming along a 30m line in order ...

Discover the Clyde

Advantages: wreck heaven, challenging diving
Disadvantages: dark dark dark dark, cold

What it offers If you have never dived the Clyde then you are missing out on some great wreck diving, which is both challenging and exhilarating at the same time. I have visited this location on two occasions now and it is becoming something of a regular date in the years diving calendar. The beauty of the Clyde is the great number of wrecks many of which are in good condition within close proximity to each other. In addition these are at a variety ...
...build up large amounts of deco time. Visibility in the Clyde can vary considerably and this is part of the challenge, I have had the odd dive where I was lucky to see my hand at times but on others the vis has been a good 10m and the sight of the wreck profile as you descend the shot line is superb. If you can get past the dark water then the currents also provide an extra dimension added to the fact that you are diving in fairly busy sea lanes ...
