I had some of the best nights out at Scruffy's whilst backpacking in Sydney.
As you can tell this is an Irish bar, and its open 24 hours. It's jam packed with backpackers from across the globe and it gets pretty messy, but its so awful and sleazy - its great!!
In the early hours of the morning, because its open 24 hours, they will close the bar for about 10-15 minutes every hour, and someone will come round with a mop and bucket, and just slosh a load of bleach on the floor to try and clean the spilt drinks, vomit and any other dodgy substance.
The drinks aren't that cheap and its a mission trying to get served at the bar. I am only 5' 4", and would get crushed by the big burly guys, so I would send my male friends to grab my vodka and red bull.
They would often have live bands playing and the atmosphere would be buzzing, and there's a club part downstairs with another bar and dancefloor. We would often head down there after the band had finished and dance the night away amongst the sweating, heaving hordes of tourists. It was great fun, and nobody cared it was so trashy.
The smoking section outside is tiny, and groups of us would be huddled close together trying to get our nicotine fix, but by this point nobody cared that we were getting so cosy to our neighbours.
Scruffy's is trashy, it stinks pretty bad, its packed, its not cheap and you have to be careful not to break your neck slipping over on the mopped floor, but its FUN, FUN, FUN. It's one of those places we all hate to admit we like, but it makes a great night out for a drunken laugh, and every backpacker who visits Sydney has heard of it and no doubt stepped inside those doors to be met with total mayhem.
Fabulous.
