Located in Oxford Street,Selfridges is a giant department store that really is a marvellous place to shop in. It has just about everything you could conceivably want to buy. The Oxford Street store has recently been given a complete refurbishment and the end result is one of London's greatest department stores selling everything from furniture to fancy foods, books and magazines. as well as providing a coffee shop on each floor and a family restaurant, where you get good value for money,
The store has in excess of 17 million customers a year and covers an amazing 540,000 sq ft of selling space on seven floors. It is the second largest store in London and has a branch in the Trafford Centre in Manchester.
Selfridges, which first opened its doors in 1909,is now very stylish, airy and open. There is most decidely a fresh and contemporary look prevailing in the refurbished store. The stately columns and elegant stained windows that are very much part of the store's character were retained. To attract the youthful population there is a fashion area known as Selfridges Spirit, just for them, this stocks many of the top designer names. There is a one-stop Men's Accessory Hall created by internationally renowned interior designer Christian Liagre and for women there are new names such as Asian-based Song and Kelly, World a collection from Australia ,as well as hordes of traditional and famous designer labels.Glamorous and glitzy party wear, shimmering colourful textiles, accessories, embroidery, satin, velvet, and beading-just take your pick ladies !
The sheer size of Selfridges, enables it to house several concessions of top designer names for both men and women,as well as an excellent selection of less pricy,mass-marketed lines. Especially popular with young ladies is the Miss Selfridge boutique which stocks cutting-edge,teenage fashions at reasonably moderate prices.
There is a good food hall at Selfridges-a veritable haven for serious foodies- and you can even order foodstuffs for delivery to your home. They deliver anywhere within the M25 for 5 pounds and outside the M25 the delivery charge is tn pounds. Other goodies you can buy include traditional wicker hampers for picnics.
The tourists may want to head for Harrods but if I want to buy a shirt, some magazines, a present for a friend or something for my daughter, Selfridges is where I head for when I am in London.

Advantages: Large, spacious, choice, service, location, value during the sales, find things you are unlikely to find on the High Street. Disadvantages: Odour of the food hall, one might get lost, sometimes it is expensive, sometimes it is better to shop on Bond Street shop by shop.
