We arrived after a real eye opening journey from the airport which I have mentioned in my op on The Gambia in general, at 4pm in the afternoon. I decided that Proper air conditioning was going to be needed because the humidity was so high both day and night. So after a lot of fuss from me we were found a much nicer room with proper remote controlled air conditioning. Mind you I did have to pay an extra £70 for the privilige. It does mention this in the brochures though. My son was straight in the swimming pool and stayed there until about 7pm. The rooms on the whole were basic but ... more

We arrived after a real eye opening journey from the airport which I have mentioned in my op on The Gambia in general, at 4pm in the afternoon. I have to say on seeing our room for the first time I was disappointed. The ceiling fan was hanging of the ceiling and was limping round looking as if it was about to fall on to us at any minute. The rooms on the whole were basic but very clean, and were always cleaned every day with clean towels too. An important part of my holiday. The gardens were lovely and there were birds of all varieties flying everywhere. Something that struck me - whatever time of day or night the birds would always be singing -. There were special clubs and look out points dotted round the grounds of the hotel for bird lovers to watch and record the different species. In fact this hotel actually had special interest holidays for bird lovers. Every morning at around 11 am breakfast was provided for the eagles and vultures. Well before that time they would appear circling high above the swimming pool, gradually getting lower, then they would land and we could watch them feeding and washing and grooming under the water sprayers. Our room was opposite a small pond and this is where we would find 2 monitor lizards relaxing everyday. They were tame enough for me to be able to touch their skins. We also saw monkeys swinging in the trees and ocassionally jumping in front of us chattering then running away fast.
The daytime enertainment was good. There was plenty going on around the swimming pool, and you have the chance to do tennis volley ball football and archery if you wish. Personally I just found it too hot to be that active. The nightime entertainment was a bit slapdash, but always enthusiastic.
The food was very good for a biggish hotel. Something for eveyones taste. We were able to purchase lunch such as pizza etc, from the hotel, or a beach hut on the beach. But we rarely ventured onto the beach as the hassle was too much for my daughter to cope with, being blonde and blue eyed, she attracted attention she didn't want then. We ate our main meals outside under the verandah. In the evenings it was always lit up, and the bats would be flying around everywhere. Not for the faint hearted, but we didn't mind at all.
All in all I loved this place and I do believe since we went it has been refurbished or parts of it have anyway. Its classed as a 3 star hotel in the brouchures which I think is a fair rating. The service was always good and the staff polite and friendly.
Their is a local market and some bars and restaurants just up the road from the hotel which are worth a visit. Also taxis, and people offering to take you here there and everywhere. Choose carefully.
Advantages: Large spacious grounds and friendly staff Disadvantages: No air conditioning
...My family stayed at the Senegambia Beach Hotel, in the town of Kololi. I would recommend staying in Kololi, as it contains the most restaurants and bars. Alternatively, there are hotels in Bajul, the Capital, however there are less amenities there.
The Senegambia Hotel is a self-contained complex, with rooms based in blocks. There are about 8 rooms in each building block. This provides a bit of privacy and makes you feel as if you are not crammed ... ...from ₤50-₤100 per person. Overall, The Gambia provides a sunshine holiday for people wanting to travel further affield, with the desire to explore new places, off the beaten track. I would thoroughly recommend staying at the Senegambia Hotel, as it provides a comfortable base in a beautiful country. ...

Advantages: Grounds, Location Disadvantages: Basic level of the rooms.
I visited the hotel in April 2008, with my boyfriend. I have to say that it was an absolutely brilliant holiday. The rooms were very basic, but we only used it to sleep in as we were outside either by the pool or somewhere else for the entire day. We went with Thomas Cook so air conditioninig was included in our bill (i believe that if you go with Thomson you have to pay extra). We stayed on a B&B basis, but always tended to eat lunch at the hotel ... ...The hotel is also in a brilliant place for eating out in the evening. The road leading down to the hotel has so many different restaurants it is difficult to decide every night, and they are all very cheap.
Within the hotel the grounds are beautiful, and the wildlife is amazong. We saw families of monkeys nearly everyday, and the staff are extrememly friendly and relaxed. It does have a 3 star rating, and if you are expecting luxury then don't go ...

Advantages: good location, near beach, restaurants and bars Disadvantages: staff can be defensive, due to cultural differences
Visiting this country was part of one of my university modules. Myself, 4 lectures and over 40 students went over to the Gambia January this year (2005). This hotel therefor wasn't my choice but the module leaders. I am however very pleased of their choice. It is very near the airport which is good as when we landed the temperature was 31 degrees and after a flight lasting just over 6 hours getting to the hotel quickly was a major priority. On arrival ... ...our luggage, waited by reception for us and then took them to our rooms. Our rooms were situated the furthest away from the hotel, near some beautiful trees and flowers that showed the most wonderful birds. This was a problem as during the night the amount of light was minimal. However on walking back to the hotel one afternoon it was wonderful to notice lizards near the pond and only the once we saw the monkeys from the near nature reserve. The ...

Advantages: The largest grounds of any hotel in the Gambia, excellent food, friendly helpfull staff. Disadvantages: None really, overallgood, Locals can be tiresome outside of hotel.
The Senegambia Beach Hotel is one of the best known resorts in The Gambia. Situated on the Atlantic Coast with a private beach front the Hotel sits in Twenty Five acres of landscaped grounds. The hotel is Two Star by European standards, although it is listed as up to Four Star in Brochures. The accomodation, in 2 storey, motel like blocks and situated around the grounds, is sparse, but clean and well maintained. Food is of a high standard. Entertainment ... ...The gardens boast a huge variety of Birdlife, certainly more than you would see in a year in the UK. The gardens also boast a troop of small monkeys and some large, up to 5 foot long, Monitor lizards. There is also a 10 o'clock feeding ritual of Kites, Eagles and Vultures that is worth seeing, in fact you cannot miss it as it happens close to the swimming pool. Poolside sevice is good and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Outside of the hotel ...
