Sentosa gets a bad rap from many people for being "commercial" or being "a big theme park", but as a parent with a 4 year old kid, you soon see it in a whole new light....it's torture.... because on Sentosa kids rule.
The whole place is set up to get your kids to spend as much of your money as they can...and you will...and that's enough about money.
Our day...
We started off taking the ferry from the mainland to the Island, this is a very short and uneventful trip. VERY short, so short that you have to wonder why it's there...
Anyway we then walked up the path to the Merlion, on first looks you might say.. "No, I'm not going inside that" it looks tacky, but ignore that and get inside, take the lift to the top and enjoy the view over the island, it is worth it, especially on a hot day when you can catch a nice breeze.
Then we moved on to the butterfly park, my daughter loved this and was eventually persuaded that chasing Butterflies in Singapore was not a good plan, and then she got totally freaked by the collection of huge and gruesome insects on display. If your not into dead butterflies and insects then skip that and spend all your time in the tropical garden with the live ones.
On to the Marine Park...don't miss the giant turtles outside and then into the underwater aquariam walk with the fish, see Seahorses and other weird sea creatures you may never have seen before. There is often a special display on too, while I was there...there wasn't but they were setting up for "Up the Amazon"...
As well as enjoying walking through the tunnel there is also a "touch tank" where you and the kids can touch various fish and sea creatures. If you are a diver you can also go diving with the sharks, non divers can do a short dive with the other fish, costs were around $100 Sing I believe.
Then on to the highlight of the day for my daughter, which made me very proud as she appreciated the next bit more than the theme parks... the Pink Bottled Nosed Dolphins... okay put aside the arguement over whether having dolphins in a park is right or not, seeing them thrilled my daughter to bits and getting a chance to touch one has her still talking about it 6 months later...
Then onto the beach front for a swim in the lagoon before taking the sky train all the way to the cable car we got there in time to take the cable car as the sun was setting over the island and the we made a slight mistake..what ever you do, do NOT take the cable car all the way to Mount Faber in the evening, get off at the mid way stop...there are no taxis at Mount Faber in the evening....it's a long wait...with a nice view.

If you don't have a 4 year old with you there is a very good heritage museum that you enter near to the merlion. I don't remember it well enough to write an op. Would be suitable for children but probably not as young as 4. Enjoyed reading your experiences.

I'd love to get the chance to visit this place and pet the dolphins. Great review. Rob

Advantages: Plenty to see and do, great for the whole family, Easy to get around the island Disadvantages: Prices for individual attractions on top of the entry onto Sentosa
Advantages: Perfect for a unique cultural immersion and a wild food-attack. Excellent transport system means getting to anywhere is a breeze. Disadvantages: Hot (at least 30C everyday). Also, there is no natural scenery to speak of.
