Any visit to Borneo wouldn not be complete without a trip to Sepilok. To see the Orang Utans flourishing in their natural habitat is a rare treat indeed, and should not be missed.
The coach journey from Kota Kinabalu takes about 8 hours, and Sandakan is something of a disappointment. It boasts a lively fish market and a KFC, and that's about it. However, you can avoid Sandakan altogether if you get the coach driver to drop you at Sepilok, and accommodation is available here.
For the most part, Borneo is not a place of luxury or decadence, it is a place for those in search of new experiences and challenges. The isolation felt whilst staying in the wooden huts in the rainforest at Sepilok is wonderful, if you can allow yourself to relax, and take it for what it is.
There are 2 times of the day when you can walk to see the Orang Utans, either morning or afternoon feeding. As you walk through the forst to the feeding ground, you will be accompanied by Macaque monkeys, who may get a little close for comfort! Once at the feeding ground, you will see many Orang Utans, probably over 20, and some may even come up to greet you. It is certainly an experience that shows how alike man is to ape, as you observe their family groups and their mating rituals. Words cannot describe the feeling of wonderment that comes over you here, but it is a feeling that will stay with you forever.
After this special experience, leave Sepilok in search of new adventures, perhaps head to the Mount Kinabalu National park by coach, and see what other wonders this amazing island has to offer.....
