Advantages: The best movie to come down the pipes in quite some time. Disadvantages: absolutely none. (though some deride its length)
Chance. Fate. Coincidence. "And the book says we may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us". These are the themes that run under and around Magnolia, the dizzying third film from writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights). Juggling many characters and multiple, interweaving story lines, Anderson creates a whirlwind of a film that constantly surprises and entertains its audience. Drawing out a handful of strong performances from his actors working from a powerfully emotive script, Anderson fashions a three hour epic meditation on life in the San Fernando Valley that ultimately becomes a universal film about love and redemption at the close of the millenium.

Advantages: Brilliantly written and interwoven stories. Disadvantages: Runs out of steam eventually.

Similarly stricken gameshow host Jimmy Gator (Hall) tries to reconcile himself with his cokehead daughter Claudia (Walters), just as she embarks on a tentative relationship with lonely cop Jim Kurring ...

Advantages: Very watchable and fine casting Disadvantages: You need to have tissues at the ready!
This film is about 6 strong women who endure life's ups and downs with friendship, love and wit, and emerge through the other side stronger - hence the name 'Steel Magnolias'.
The film, directed by Herbert Ross, was brought to film in 1989, and set in the deep south of Louisiana.
Truvy (Dolly Parton) owns the beauty parlour which is the hubbub of all life and gossip. Everyone seems to go there for more than a haircut - they also go for gossip, chat and a time with their friends. Truvy takes on Annelle (Daryl Hannah), whose first day also happens to be Shelby's (Julia Roberts) wedding day. Shelby has diabetes and has been told by doctors not to have children as it will damage her kidneys. Her bond with her mother is a very close mother-daughter one and her mother, M'Lynn (Sally Field) will do anything for Shelby. The other two ...
