The Floating Gardens of Mexico City

Advantages: Unique day or half day trip
Disadvantages: A fair distance out of town

Having lived in Mexico City since the start of July, I can't believe it's taken me over 3 months to visit this place, since it's one of the most famous attractions in the city and has been since the 1920s. Xochimilco (soch-ee-milk-oh) is an area located to the south of the city, known for its series of canals, the remains of old Lake Xochimilco. Quick trivia here, this was home to canoeing and rowing competitions when Mexico hosted the Olympics back in 1968. ~ Getting There and When To Go ~ Xochimilco isn't just a bit south of the city, it's a long way away, so much so that it took me over an hour to get there and I already live south of the centre. Metros only run as far as Tasqueña (end of Line 2, the blue one) and from there you can either catch the Tren Ligero ("electric train" or as I would call it...a tram) or take ...

Review of Xochimilco, Mexico City

Sevilla: the City of Oranges and much more

Advantages: Architectural beauty; fantastic weather; great food; beautiful people...
Disadvantages: Very few

Sevilla... the word is almost as beautiful as the city itself. I have been fortunate enough to experience quite a few places across the globe, and I could count on the fingers of one hand (and I could probably afford to be missing a few fingers) the number of places that have left more of an impression on me than Sevilla. I visited in the summer before I came to university, on an itinerary that took in the usual tourist hotspots in Andalucia; Granada, Cordoba, Cadiz, and so on. The whole atmosphere was one that I found particularly intoxicating; you are constantly immersed in grand architecture, of which the Real Alcazar and the Catedral (the pillars of which remind me of that scene in Moria in the Lord of the Rings where the hordes of goblins start swarming down from the ceiling) are paradigmatic examples. The weather is ...

Review of Sevilla (Spain)

A palatial palace.

Advantages: Large rooms by NY standards, good service, quality furnishings.
Disadvantages: Expensive.

A few years ago, I worked for a Swiss bank and it was necessary for me to make frequent business trips to Zurich and New York. Whenever I as in New York, I tried to get a room in the New York Palace Hotel and fortunately most of the time I was successful. So this is a hotel I have stayed at on many occasions. By and large, my experiences were similar each time; I always stayed in the same standard of room and I always received the same standard of service from the staff. The New York Palace, or the Palace as I call it, it takes up the entire block between Madison and Park Avenues and 50th and 51st street, i.e. midtown Manhattan. I think this is a perfect location for any visitor as many of the highlights of New York are within easy walking distance. The Rockefeller Plaza is moments away and it is an easy walk to Broadway and Times ...
