I visited this on business but perfect for business or pleasure
WHEN & HOW LONG ================= Nine days starting on a Saturday after the Easter break. Noon to 7 am!!!! On the far bank of the river, the Real de la Feria
Schools are on holiday, businesses shut down!
Dates are 00.00 hours on:
April 24th 2006 16th April 2007 31 March 2008 20 April 2009 12 April 2010
WHAT IS IT? ========== On 18 April 1847 it was approved that two councillors, Jose Maria Ybarrra and Narciso Bonaciata held a livestock fair
Twelve months three "casetas" (stands): the Duke and Duchess of Montpensier, the Town Hall and the Casino of Seville appeared. In the twenties, it became an area of marked streets lined with casetas.
Now it's a great excuse to party/eat/drink/dance/sing!
TRADITIONAL COSTUMES ===================== Men:- ------- "Traje de corto" (short jacket, tight trousers and boots)
Females:- -------------- The "farales" (flamenco style colourful dresses) with colourful accessories and flowers in the hair.
You don't need to dress in traditional costume to visit - just being a tourist/visitor is excellent and you can soak up the atmosphere! You never know, next year I may buy/rent one!!!
CASETAS ========= This year, 1037 casetas over 15 streets! They are brightly coloured marquees, with a front bit (tables/chairs for eating/drinking) and a back bit for the bar/kitchen area.
Each one is like an individual party with dancing and singing. It's difficult to acquire a caseta, they are normally passed down the family or owned by politicians, clubs, asscociations, groups of friends or local businesses.
Most are by invite only, but you can get in to some without. The "caseta municipal" is run by the town hall, and is one of the largest and always open to everyone, but it can be completely full if a well known band or singer is on stage.
If you cannot get into one, just wandering around is fabulous!!
FLAMENCO DANCING =================== After 9pm the tables/chairs are taken away and the dancing starts! I had a go - a lovelly Spanish lady showed me the hand and feet movements. Raise one arm in the air to take an apple, put your hand to your move to take a bite then lower it to put it down! (Easy....just need to co-ordinate it with your foot movements, twirls and opposite arm movements!!!!!) The women in their traditional dress look absolutely devine!
PARADES/FAIR ============= Starts at midday, with horses/carriages and riders; a tradition where economic and social power are exhibited. Ending at the beginning of the afternoon and the carriages make their way to the bullring, the Real Maestranza where the best bullfighters and breeders meet. At night, the fairgrounds start - lots of bright lights and festivitity.
The streets are then lit up with rows of lights - utterly amazing!
Researching for this review, I came across these websites:
Getting there:
==== You can fly direct by Ryanair from Liverpool or Stansted or BA via Gatwick/Heathrow. I flew with Ryanair and booked it 2 weeks before travel and it cost £75.
Hotels ====== Obviously if you google search you can find loads! I stayed at the Congresso for E 135 + E 11.50 for a buffet breakfast (15 mins from the airport and 10 mins from the city. http://www.sevilla-congresoshotel.com/
Hope you can make it to this event next year!

Sounds beautiful - A place I would love to explore because of my tastes in Flamenco (Juan Martin, Carlos Montoya), and also the whole historical façade. Rob.
