I first visited Shanghai Shuffle Cantonese karaoke Restaurant for a Christmas party night in 2003. We were a group of ladies (15 of us) looking for someone fun to go where we could all stick together.
Shanghai Shuffle was recommended to me by a friend who advised us to book way ahead in advance because it gets very busy around Christmas period. I called to book a table for 15 for a Wednesday night in December, and was told every night in December was fully booked already! Ok you'll be thinking I must have left it a bit late for every night to be fully booked? But this was at the beginning of July!!!!
Anyway I was then told we could be booked in for the last Wednesday in November as they were now offering Christmas party nights in November because they had a lot of demand for it. So I grabbed the booking and promptly sent off the cheque of £5 per head as a deposit! The rest payable on the evening (see below for price lists)
So the big night arrived and all of my friends and I got all glammed up and got our tinsel out for our hair….sad I know but hey we're young(ish) ahem youngest was 20 eldest was over 50…..
We arrived at Shanghai Shuffle at about 7:15pm in time for our 7:30pm booking, And were shown to our seats in what I can only say was a seemingly small restaurant which hosted a tiny dance floor and even tinier stage! I think there was around 7-8 large tables which could fit between 15-20 people, As soon as my group had sat down and settled a Chinese waitress came round asking for our drinks order (first drink was on the house) woohoooo my kinda place!
Soon after that another waiter came around to take our food order (see menu on website below) We didn't wait too long before our starters started to arrive. I chose the
chicken noodle soup which was delicious mmmm, followed by a chicken curry which came in a bowl and a huge bowl of rice was placed on table too from which you helped yourself. That too was delicious! And then My favourite part of the meal was the dessert…………I chose strawberry cheesecake which was truly scrumptious (licking my lips at thought)
Of course you'd be forgiven for thinking that this was just like any other restaurant but just before you start eating, Tony the Chinese guy who I think owns the restaurant comes out in his full Scottish dress! Kilt and all (and let me tell you he proved he was a true Scotsman) not for the faint hearted I can tell you! He welcomes each and every one of his guests and then tells us that this is a restaurant with a difference….in that there are no rules except one and that was to have fun and enjoy yourselves, dance on the chairs, dance on the tables get up and sing whenever you feel the urge! Now ya talking Tony me old pal waheyyy.
So then he introduces the lovely David and gorgeous Kathleen who are the restaurants resident Karaoke hosts and are fantastic singers! They kick off the evening with a lively song which gets the crowd in the mood, and all this is whilst we're sitting eating our lovely meal!
Next thing I know the table next to us (apparently seasoned shufflers) got up and started dancing on their chairs :-o Wow I thought they at least waited till the meal was over but nope if you don't get up and dance during your meal then you look like the odd ones out…so what could we do but join in haha. No I don't have the photos (well I do but you lot ain't seeing them)
Ooooo sound like fun? You ain't heard nothing yet.
David comes around table getting peoples name up to sing songs in the karaoke and halfway through night he asks who would like to play a little party game to win a free drink? Well anyone who knows me and my friends would be shocked if they thought we knocked back the chance of free booze… so we all volunteered along with probably the entire females in the room. He then asked all of us to remove our bra's and hang them around his body! (he was wearing a kilt too by the way) I managed to hook mine around his neck, but a few other girls found more imaginative places…ahem!
He then walked about a little while with about 40 bra's all over him, and 40 women dancing on chairs with their emmm bits flowing free (under clothing of course) and then said if you can retrieve your own bra with your teeth then you can take a ticket for free drink! Excellent for me as mine was around his neck somewhere and he did smell divine and looked cute too. But those poor women who had found the more imaginative places, well let's just say they did eventually get their free drinks ;-)
As if all that wasn't bad enough…Tony the host, comes around tables with a huge glass and I mean HUGE glass of what I'm sure is a cocktail of drinks, and a straw in it which is about a meter long ( to give you an idea of the size of the glass) Anyway anyone who wants to give it a try can. At the time we weren't thinking of the hygiene of it all.
Later on Tony came around each table with a bottle of wine a funnel and a tea towel hmmmm what is he up to now? Well he chooses someone to lean back on to another chair and holds the bottle and funnel over their mouths sort of between his legs and pours, and yep you guessed right you end up wearing most of the wine haha that's where the tea towel helps. This is truly a mad place with mad people!
He then chooses one person from each party to go upstairs with him, or sometimes chooses so many guys from the crowd and so many girls. They go up to the room upstairs and get changed into funny outfits…The theme of our night's groups were Elvis's and abba! They came down wearing the costumes, guys had fake boobs girls had quiffs and it was hilarious, they had to get up and sing dancing queen and an Elvis number too. Sooo funny!
So lots of singing, lots of dancing, not really much eating to be honest as you tended to forget you had food. Then the inevitable time came for having to go to the loo…… This was my only complaint about Shanghai Shuffle, although it was small, it did get busy and they only had one ladies room and one gents, with only 3 ladies cubicles in it, which if I'm being honest weren't the cleanest loo's I've been in, but they weren't dirty or anything just lacked paper towels from time to time and so loo roll was all over floor, but suppose the staff were a bit busy to keep on top of this all night long too.
Definitely not a place to visit if you're timid, but if you're up for a laugh, like to dance, and looking for a superb night out in Glasgow then this is the place to go….better in large groups for a really fun night.
I've now been here 3 times since and still love it, been in summer time too and they still offer great party nights then which are equally as good as the Christmas party nights!

Sounds like the barbeque night me and mum went on in Majorca, except we were the only two dancing on the tables. LOL. Next day wherever we went people said Hi Sheena, Hi Sheena's mum. LOL.
