Stepping into Shanklin Chine is like stepping into another world. Peaceful, tranquil and calm are words that spring to mind when I think back on my visits to Shanklin Chine, and I definitely recommend a visit.
**History and Location**
Shanklin Chine is located in Shanklin Old Village on the Isle of Wight. Shanklin is a small, historic seaside town, located next to Sandown on the Eastern side of the Island. Formation of the Chine or 'gorge' has taken place over 10,000 years. It's quite strange to think that you're walking through something that has taken so long to form! The word 'chine' means a deep, narrow ravine, and the word is now only used on the Isle of Wight and Dorset. Shanklin Chine drops down 105ft to sea level, and is just over a quarter of a mile long.
You can access the Chine in two ways. The first is from within ...
Advantages: Beach, Town, Pubs, Clubs Disadvantages: not much to do in the winter
if there are only seven stops in a straight line from Shanklin to Ryde), then do. The train station is situated at the end of the high street and is fairly cheap.
Along with the main town in Shanklin, you also have Shanklin old Village that is a further 5 to 10 minute walk out of town. On entering the old village, you immediately notice the quaint thatched roofs of shops and cottages and the small winding road leading through it. There are plenty of places to eat in the old village including a pub called The Crab and one called the Village Inn. The village Inn is part of the Holliers Hotel complex which includes the pub, hotel and a small nightclub, open till 2 on weekends. There are various other places to eat including a Tapas bar and an Italian restaurant, which are both well-priced and reputable places to dine.
