A City Centre Oasis With Victorian Beauty!

Advantages: Peacfeful Place In The Heart Of A Bustling City
Disadvantages: Closes Quite Early Even During The Summer

Sheffield is the fifth largest city in England in terms of population but it is also one of the greenest cities in the country. I remember reading a few years ago that there were more Parks and Recreational areas within the Urban boundaries of Sheffield per square acre of its total area than other city in England and any visitor to the city will probably vouch for this.

The four largest Parks in the City: Graves Park, Norfolk Park, ...
...of the city is the Sheffield Botanical Gardens which is a place where you can quite literally step off one of the busiest roads in the city and walk into a tranquil area of Woodland and Gardens.

THE LOCATION

The main entrance to the Botanical Gardens is located just off Ecclesall Road (The A61) on Clarkehouse Road whilst there is a second smaller entrance on Thomson Road near Ecclesall. I normally enter the Gardens via ... more

A little oasis of peace...

Advantages: Absolute peace from the chaos of the city, wonderful plants, a new conservatory that will be finished by the end of 2002
Disadvantages: May get a little to packed on bank holidays or when the sun shines (which is rare!!)

Sheffield is a leafy city outside the old industrial areas. Around the university and in the areas of Crookes, Walkley and Netherthorpe there are some large parks and fishing lakes. These areas allow my girlfriend and myself to get away from the noise and hustle of the city. Among these areas is the Botanical gardens, a walled off park that has been around since the Victorian age. This area really epitomises what a peaceful and horticulturally varied ...
...two entrances to the gardens, a small gate at the bottom of the park leading on to Thompson Road near Ecclesall, and the second being the main entrance on Clarkehouse Road. This main entrance has been renovated to resemble the original Victorian entrance. This comprises of a Sandstone built wall with the gatehouse built in the shape of a Neo-classical regency-style and provides the walk way into paradise. It all adds to the grandeur of entering the ...

Beauty in the heart of the city

Advantages: Huge variety of plants, plenty to see, IT'S FREE!
Disadvantages: none

Over the past few years the fantastic botanical gardens has become one of my favourite places to spend time. Considering it is in the heart of the city this is a haven of tranquillity and beauty - even at the height of summer you can always find a nice secluded spot to relax in, be it under a tree on the vast lawns, or a bench in one of the various enclosed gardens. In the spring and summer it is a must see for anyone who enjoys taking plant and ...
...trees are superb. The garden is seperated into various sections including a formal and pretty extensive rose garden, the asian garden (my favourite) with various rhododendrons and a special section for plants that have received RHS honours (some fantastic photo ops here too!) - and many others. There is also a huge fossilized tree stump, water gardens and the old victorian bearpit which always seems popular (you can go inside and meet the bear. ...

Weston Park, Sheffield

Advantages: Easily Accessible
Disadvantages: Quite Small

of the easiest Parks in Sheffield to get to by Public transport. From the City Centre the number 60 Bus leaves the main Interchange Bus Station every 10 minutes whilst the number 51 and 52 leave High Street every 8 minutes. Other Buses including the 41 and 95 also run frequently throughout the day. There is also a Tram Stop at the University. If you are visiting by Car then parking is possible at the side of the main road in front of the Children's Hospital but this area does sometimes get rather congested. There are four entrances into/out of the Park, the largest of these being the one directly opposite the Children's Hospital, this is also the closest entrance to the Museum. Weston Park was designed by Robert Marnock in 1873, a well respected English Landscape Gardener who had also designed the City's Botanical Gardens and the Sheffield ...

Sheffield's Golden Mile!

Advantages: Good variety of bars and shops, easily accesible, good atmosphere
Disadvantages: Some shop prices are quite high

's largest recreation areas lie directly off Ecclesall Road. These are the Botanical Gardens, Endcliffe Park and in my opinion one of Sheffield's finest little gems, the Sheffield General Cemetery. Ecclesall Road is within easy walking distance of the city centre, leading off from the bottom of one of the main pedestrianised shopping areas known as The Moor. From here a subway crosses under the busy dual carriageway, St Mary's Gate and as you come up for air at the other side, you have arrived at the bottom of Ecclesall Road. The first thing that you will quickly notice is that there is a very lively street life, many of the café's and bars have tables and chairs that spill out onto the pavement and especially during the summer months, there is an almost Mediterranean ambiance. The Pamona is a popular bar that is found at the end ...

Would you "Hallam and Eve" it?

Advantages: Good food, free parking, ideal for the city centre and Sheffield Hallam University
Disadvantages: No wake-up call or newspaper, limited free parking, if you don't post your ticket you risk getting clamped

. It was only when I received the meeting agenda that I realised the significance of the statement about its location. It wasn?t just ideal, it was bang, smack opposite. I almost felt like I had won the lottery. The meeting didn?t start until 11am; that wasn?t enough time for me to risk travelling in the morning (250 miles), but late enough for me to have a minor lay in, and take my time getting ready. Plus, I wouldn?t have to worry about finding the place or getting parking. LOCATION The Novotel is in the centre of Sheffield, a short walk from the shops and opposite Hallam University. It is accessible from Junction 33 of the M1; Simply follow the signs for the city centre, and then Sheffield Hallam University. You cannot miss it, it is the easiest to find of any hotel I have ever used. It is also next to the Millenium Botanic ...
