In my opinion Sheffield council has wasted a lot of money on silly schemes and plans when it should have been looking at improving roads and public areas. Over the last 10 years or so they seem to have blown a lot of money, for example Supertram, World Student games and more recently The centre for popular music. As far as i am aware the Supertram is still running at a loss (correct me if i'm wrong) and the centre for popular music closed down.

Anyway apart from that its a fantastic place and is very popular with students, and has a great night life. Where I live if I travel 5 minutes one way i'm in the heart of the city, and if I travel 5 minutes the opposite i'm out into the beautiful countryside. If your a starting uni next year I can strongly recommend Sheffield to you and if you've already signed up, well, GOOD CHOICE!!!
Along with Shefield City centre we also have Meadowhall Shopping centre on the outskirts of Sheffield which is one of the largest in the U.K and probably thee biggest tourist attraction in Sheffield which offers all the top name stores and free parking, which has had a knock on effect and taken a lot of the trade and atmosphere away from the city.
Great things (or not so great??) to come from Sheffield
Sheffield is one of the best places to be. It is full of attractions for everyone. It has a great nightlife with many clubs including Gatecrasher at Republic. There is a huge shopping centre called Meadowhall, which also has a cinema. There is a centertainment near to it called UGC, which has really big screens and a lot of leg room. In the city centre there are also quite a lot of shops and an area to rest in and admire called the Peace Gardens ...

Advantages: Very central to most of England Disadvantages: Meadowhall has killed the city centre off
Sheffield became a city in 1889 approxiamate guess. Its the fourth largest city in England, with London, Birmingham and Leeds just in front of us. We have two universitys Sheffield Hallam and University of Sheffield. We have two fhigh profile football teams, Sheffield United and Wednesday. We are also home to the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC still in exsitence. For some strange reason Rotherham United have started to play games ... ...the sheffield one valid on all first services, on the tram its only £3 however this is a limited offer, which can be used on stagecoach busses. A more expensive option is the south yorkshire daytripper at £5.50 which can be used on trains and all trams and busses. ...

Advantages: loads to do -friendly people Disadvantages: Rain! and is highly under rated
Sheffield - a place of natural beauty. I have now lived in Sheffield for 14 years and it really is a great place to live or visit. You can be in the town centre with thousands of busy shoppers one moment and only 8 miles away you can be in one of the most tranquil places in England, the peak district.
In the past 10 years Sheffield has really gone though a major facelift especially in the city centre with new attractions such as the winter gardens ... ...pleasant place to live/visit.
Sheffield is also the home to Medowhall ,one of the countries largest indoor shopping centres with around 250 shops inside.Medowhall ,often nicknamed medowhell by the locals is the perfect place to by everything under one roof especially if it's a rainy day but unfortunately it is utter madness during the weeks running up to Christmas. Sheffield is also home to two football teams (well professional ones) Sheffield United ...

Advantages: cheap to live here, nice people Disadvantages: bad buses
What can I say about this place? Well ive lived here for 21 years now, and loved every minute. Wherever you are, youre never more than about 15minutes from breathtaking scenery, rolling hills and the beautiful sight of the hills on all sides of the town centre. Of course, the big out of town shopping centre that is Meadowhall™ has virtually killed off the aged city centre. The only redeeming feature of "town" now is that theres a virgin megastore ... ..."gardens". Good job meadowhall is one of the better shopping centres in the country then isnt it? one word about the locals - theres nowhere on this planet where you will find more helpful, cheerful and talkative strangers. Simple as that. On a bad note - the bus service is appalling. OK sure, theres loads of buses to student areas and the like, theres even a 24 hour Service to Crookes etc, but the other parts of the city are poorly serviced. Not ...

Sheffield in South Yorkshire was once the greatest producer of Steel in the whole world. The City built its reputation on quality steel, in particular the craftsmanship that went into the cutlery made there. Today there are only a few small steel companies left in the City, but the decline in the steel industry has not led to the decline of the town. The plight of the steel workers was a problem for a number of years (watch the film – The Full ... ...live or visit. Sheffield has an excellent location for travel, being on the M1 motorway and with a fast rail link to London. Most of the area of the former steel works is now the excellent Sheffield Airport that is continuing to grow in its popularity and use. The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield has become synonymous with the World Snooker Championship, but also this is the location for many other great productions during the year. The 12,000 seater ...

Advantages: it's nice, reasonably calm, and generally a nice place to be. Disadvantages: not really many
Sheffield is a large city, in South Yorkshire in southern northern England (if that makes sense). It is a large city and is in the five largest cities in the country.
Getting There...
Sheffield has wonderful transport links by bus and train with local bus services and coach services from up and down the coutry and trains to and from London and pretty much everywhere else in England. There is a lack of parking in sheffield and roads are very crowded so going by car is never a good idea though if you are wanting to get into the city centre then you can park at a park and ride and get the supertram to the city centre which is very convenient (see my review of the sheffield supertram system).
The City Centre...
The city centre of sheffield is in my opinion, one of England's best and is very clean, light and open and feels very safe ...
Living in Sheffield ( the Uk's 4th largest city) and liking to travel has always proved a bit of a hassel having to travel to either Manchester or Eastmidlands or even in some cases a1 4 houir journey to London so when it was announced that we were going to get a airport i started to get excited even if it would only be a stol airport (short take off and land) meaning having a small runway, we were promised that regualr services would run from there, and to my delight they were right.
As soon as the airport opened i booked a flight, flying with KLM to schipol Airport in Amsterdam ( see the KLM report)
The service at sheffield is fantastic, the staff are grate whatr more can i say
It's just another pluss to our wonderfull city. ...
Advantages: local departures Disadvantages: Not the cheapest airline
I'm a regular traveler to the united States and after reading reviews of the nasty airline KLM i've got to write one that shows their other side.
I live in SheffieldEngland, Famouse for many things bust more recently the film The Full Monty.
Sheffield although being the countries 4th largest city only recently get a aitport and the first airline to announce services from there was KLM to Schipol.
I jumped at the chance of flying there and then a simple change in Amsterdam onto the international flight.
The flight left ontime, 6.30 am, the check in staff couldn't do enough and what a pleasent surprise when the flight took off, cabin crew that cared.
After flying many other airlines from other airports let me assure you this is rare.
The flight was smooth, the inflight meal was nice, Piping hot and more than enough for a 70 ...
