Well i've lived here 16 years now and have seen a hell of alot of changes! I think Sheffield is definetley a City on the up, but is still lagging behind its neighbours Leeds, and Manchester.
In my opinion Sheffield council has wasted a lot of money on silly schemes and plans when it should have been looking at improving roads and public areas. Over the last 10 years or so they seem to have blown a lot of money, for example Supertram, World Student games and more recently The centre for popular music. As far as i am aware the Supertram is still running at a loss (correct me if i'm wrong) and the centre for popular music closed down.
Anyone who lives in Sheffield will know the Peace gardens, a well known area for our drunks to sleep and get merry, so what did the council do spend a fortune doing it up!!! why not spend the money on finding somewhere for these people to live and helping them with there problems.
Anyway apart from that its a fantastic place and is very popular with students, and has a great night life. Where I live if I travel 5 minutes one way i'm in the heart of the city, and if I travel 5 minutes the opposite i'm out into the beautiful countryside. If your a starting uni next year I can strongly recommend Sheffield to you and if you've already signed up, well, GOOD CHOICE!!!
Along with Shefield City centre we also have Meadowhall Shopping centre on the outskirts of Sheffield which is one of the largest in the U.K and probably thee biggest tourist attraction in Sheffield which offers all the top name stores and free parking, which has had a knock on effect and taken a lot of the trade and atmosphere away from the city.
Great things (or not so great??) to come from Sheffield
Actually, as a semi-frequent visitor, I'd say that the trams are one of the best things about Sheffield - the network's far better than the solitary line we get in Birmingham (even if building a line specially to serve blocks of flats which were then demolished was a little silly). It does seem that public opinion in Sheffield was more anti-tram than virtually anywhere else - Brum was desperate for it.

Advantages: Great public transport and lots to do Disadvantages: Not really ideal for longer than a day trip because tourism hasn't really developed here yet.
