Sheffield - a place of natural beauty. I have now lived in Sheffield for 14 years and it really is a great place to live or visit. You can be in the town centre with thousands of busy shoppers one moment and only 8 miles away you can be in one of the most tranquil places in England, the peak district.
In the past 10 years Sheffield has really gone though a major facelift especially in the city centre with new attractions such as the winter gardens and the millennium galleries. The basic shell of Sheffield has also been much improved with new roads and transport links and pedestrian walkways making it easier to get about and is now a much more pleasant place to live/visit.
Sheffield is also the home to Medowhall ,one of the countries largest indoor shopping centres with around 250 shops inside.Medowhall ,often nicknamed medowhell by the locals is the perfect place to by everything under one roof especially if it's a rainy day but unfortunately it is utter madness during the weeks running up to Christmas.
Sheffield is also home to two football teams (well professional ones) Sheffield United and also the once great Sheffield Wednesday. So if you are here when a game is on why not pop in and watch, unfortunately not the cheapest activity but no football ground is cheap anymore.
Other things to do in and around the city:
Cinemas-Odeon: (city centre) Great for new release films around 10 screens, nothing special though. (also the staff are a bit moody) Showroom: (city centre-opposite train station)-They mainly show older films or films that don't make it big .Don`t let this put you certainly worth a visit CineWorld :( valley entertainment)Situated in a large retail park identical to 100`s around the country this is Sheffield's largest cinema with 20 screens- they mainly show new release films and massively overcharge you for food and drink ,so I advise you bring your own .The staff are friendly though .
Sheffield is still certainly not the dominant city in Yorkshire ,Leeds comes out on top in that criteria with a larger population and more going for it at the moment but Sheffield still in the eyes of many and also mine is the much nicer place to be .
**Sheffield won the city in bloom competition for the U.K in 2004 and is currently in a similar Europe wide competition representing England. I have to say the city really does better for a few plants here and there; it gives it more of a fresh lively feeling.***UPDATE*** Sheffield has won theEntente Florale (europe in bloom) competition for 2005!!!
Another thing about sheffield is that people will give you the respect you deserve and will help you if you are lost or in troble unlike some other southern cities
Sheffield really does have everything to offer from peaceful countryside ideal for family picnics and walks to a bustling city centre with endless shops and attractions.
So it is definitely worth a visit to Sheffield whether you want busy and energetic of the city centre or calm or dreadful of the countryside. The only disadvantage is the weather, oh well it could be worse; it could be Manchester- the home of the rain.

Advantages: Great public transport and lots to do Disadvantages: Not really ideal for longer than a day trip because tourism hasn't really developed here yet.
