Advantages: Easily Accessible Disadvantages: Quite Small
Weston Park is the closest Public Park to Sheffield's City Centre and is probably best known for being the location of the Weston Park Museum, the City's oldest Museum.
The Museum closed in March 2003 for a major refurbishment and was due to re-open in the autumn of 2005. This renovation cost £17 million and was partly funded by National Lottery money. However major structural problems that were discovered during this refurbishment meant that the Museum only finally re-opened its doors to the Public on Saturday 14th October 2006.
The Museum is completely free to enter and is a fantastic place to visit but the rest of the Park should also not be ignored.
Weston Park covers a 5 acre site nestled between buildings that belong to the City's University and directly adjacent to the Children's Hospital. This location makes it one ...
Advantages: Free Access, Lots Of Open Space Disadvantages: Swimming Pool No Longer Open
Millhouses Park is a 32-acre Public Park that lies approximately 3 miles to the Southwest of Sheffield City Centre.
Like many of the City's Parks and Public spaces the majority of this land was gifted to the City. The majority of the land that forms this particular Park was a gift from two prominent landowners in the early 1900's, the Earl Fitzwilliam & the Marquis of Zetland. This land was given over to the control of the City Council in 1909 with small areas of adjacent land being purchased by the Council a few years later.
Millhouses Park lies in a lovely setting in a valley bottom besides the River Sheaf. Residential areas surround it to one side and mature woodland at the other. Within the Park there are many facilities including a Boating Lake, a Basketball Court, a Children's Playground, a Café, a Skate Park, Tennis Courts ...
Advantages: A Peaceful Place In The Heart Of The City Disadvantages: Some Occasional Vandalism
Norfolk Park is situated about one mile South-East of Sheffield City Centre and covers an area of 70 acres. It is one of six major City Parks and one of the reasons why Sheffield is one of the greenest Cities in Britain.
It is a place that I visit often as it is quite literally on my doorstep, but it is also a place that I try not to take too much for granted.
THE HISTORY
Norfolk Park has a long history and in fact it is actually one of the oldest Public Parks in England.
The majority of Norfolk Park was given to the Sheffield City Council in 1910 by one of the largest landowners in the area, the Duke of Norfolk. The Jervis Lum Woodlands, an area of ancient Woodland, which is now incorporated within the Park was given to the Council in 1956.
However the Park itself, which is now known as the Norfolk Heritage Park, thanks ...
