----Pubs and Clubs---- The range of pubs and clubs in the town is enormous. Whatever you are looking for it is probably here. The Leadmill is a very cultural place and is home to great club nights along with country wide bands who usually start on the road to stardom here. Bands like The Human League, Pulp, Oasis, The Verve and Mel C(???) have performed live on the famous Leadmill stage. The club was twenty this year and its originality comes out in midweek when Planet Earth hosts 80's tunes!!! A great club. Newly opened Kingdom is mostly for students and serves cheap beer which is always a good excuse for a night out! Casbah plays rock tunes and is more for the older generation among us and the rockers but everyone to their own. Worldwide renowened club nights Gatecrasher (see seperate opinion) and NY Sushi are also resident in Sheffield. These two are the biggest crowd puller for the city with 'crasher playing the best in trance and Sushi plying the drum/bass tunes. There are many bars in the city, RSVP, Yates, Bar Breeze, T.P. Woods, Bar Coast and Cavendish to name but a few. Whatever your taste in music, you are sure to find it in Sheffield.
----Shopping---- One for all the ladies out there! Their favourite past time has to be shopping. Of course Sheffield is not London or Milan but is a good substitute for their near neighbours Leeds. The Meadowhall shopping complex is your best bet if you are venturing up to Sheffield in the near future. Shops include Kookai, House of Fraser, Envy, The Disney Store, Sports Soccer, Footlocker, H&M, and Scotts. These and more are very sufficient in satisfying the need of all you baying shoppers. Not just a shopping complex, the Oasis is food area with a wide range of different cuisines to match anyones taste buds. From McDonalds to Far East Oriental there is something in Meadowhall for everyone. The city centre itself is going through something of a revamp at the minute. Gap is being built and is scheduled for a spring opening, but more importantly the road system is being re-done because frankly it was terrible before now. Just outside the main area of the city is a place called The Forum. This is where you will find all the more sophisticated shops selling well known designer names and not so well known designer names. The shops to look out for here are the small designer boutiques inside the actual building but the shops on the road are equally as 'chic'.
----Sporting Events---- Sheffield has a few decent sporting teams in the city and we are not talking just football here. Sheffield Steelers have just captured the Ice hockey National Championships and are on course for a historic quadruple. For about £12, the entrance fee alone is worth the excitement of the brawls and fist fights that goes on inseide the Sheffield Arena (which is handily sign posted off the M1). At Ponds Forge Sports Centre you can go and see the Sheffield Sharks basketball team. Basketball is taking off in a big way around the country and Sheffields own are hoping to snatch some silverware this year. Finally, i couldn't not talk about the football teams could i? United and Wednesday are in the First division and although United are higher, both teams play some good stuff at times. If you check the clubs websites there may be student ticket offers or discounts for younger people. A day at the footy will always take some bored youngster away from the doom and gloom.
----Transport---- Sheffields main bus company is First Mainline which has transport vehicles all round the country. Last year the Mainline group brought in a timetable which promised buses every 10 minutes or better. Although there have been times when this promise has not come up to much, on the whole the buses are much better now than they were. Sheffield also has atram system which can take you from the centre of town all around the city and stops at places like the Sheffield Arena and Meadowhall for those days out. Midland train station also has trains running all over the country aswell as handy local connections to places like Leeds and Doncaster.
----Other stuff---- A new Millenium Gallery is opening on the outskirts of the city centre in Spring 2001 and this promises to be a very successful venture for the city. Sheffield also has two top universities in the city as both are in the top 10 unis of England. Sheffield University is more hard to get into but Sheffield Hallam University is just as good as the other.
Well, i hope i have helped if anyone has any intention of coming to sheffield in the near future and i hope you are not dissapointed. Sorry about the long review but i felt the city is worth all these words. Ciao.
Advantages: Very centrally located within the UK Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...in the middle of England, Sheffield boasts a diverse population of around 540,000 people, very similar in size to Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester all of which all tend to overshadow it.

Close to the city centre is the Kelham Island Museum which focuses ... ...more recent times, In 1999 Sheffield became the home of the National Centre for Popular Music, Britain’s first museum dedicated to music. Sadly this complex was not the commercial success it ought to have been and currently it is closed. On a more positive note the Winter Gardens opened early 2003 offer a more promising future with their tropical plants and impressive water features.

Advantages: great place, great ents facilities, good shopping facilities, 2 universities Disadvantages: the weather!
Sheffield is one of those cities that has everything you could ever need to survuve and more! I have lived here 2 and a half years since I came to university here. Which one? Well, Sheffield is the home to 2 universities, the University of Sheffield uptown, and Hallam University, downtown. So the place is crawling with students. You just can't get away from us, as there are easily 10,000 students at Sheffield and maybe the same number at Hallam. ... ...but a huge proportion of Sheffield is made up of suburban areas from Heely, Crookes, Walkley, to Firth Park and Shiregreen, Oughtibridge and Lowedges, there are miles of villages to live in, some not as nice as others. But in the compact but happening city centre, there are many high street banks, an Anglican and Catholic cathedral and Ponds Forge swimming and fitness facilities. There are good shopping facilities along the High Street, budget shopping ...

Advantages: Lovely people, pretty city, student bus passes Disadvantages: bus drivers! The road system in town centre!
I lived in Sheff for 3 years, and was very sorry to leave recently. It has everything you could really want from a city. It is leafy, it has friendly people, it has good shopping facilities (namely Meadowhall – the out-of-town shopping centre, and The Forum (the alternative shopping experience “No meadows, no sheep” – says the sign board above the entrance). Fopp is a v. busy but cheap record store for buying (near The Forum), Record Collector in ... ...The Moor (other shopping district – whose Christmas advertising campaign consisted of a small red poster on the buses saying “There’s Moor Choice for Shopping at The Moor” – that just about sums up the quality of shops down there) Best restaurant: Viva Tequila in Gleadless Best pub: Wetherspoons in town/ The Union in Netheredge, The Phoenix on Derbyshire border Best quiet area: The peace gardens (but not on a day where there is any kind of sunshine ...

Advantages: clean, excellant shopping, good sport, good pubs, good people, near the country, living is cheap Disadvantages: too many hills, too much traffic
Having lived in SHEFFIELD for 8 years, I have found this city to be alive, theres so much to do here, as i work in a night club i see all the local people, really the night life is so real, we have the top nightspots in the country and people come from far and wide. I also work at both the football grounds in the city as a steward, and i see many fans from far and wide and the away supporters often say how wonderful the grounds are and what a delight ...

...finished my second year at sheffield hallam uni and have found sheffield to be a top city for students, especially at night. The general atmosphere is great and i would recommend it to anyone who wants a really classic night out. Living is very cheap with many places, such as the bars and the clubs, offering very low cost drinks and food. Redbull and Vodka is 60p at the unit night club, which gives you an idea of the kind of value for money you get ...

Advantages: Peaceful, Full Of Local History Disadvantages: Some Vandalism In Places
A Cemetery may seem like a bit of a bizarre place to review on Ciao under the category of UK attractions but before you all scurry away and hit the NH button just bear with me a moment because this is no ordinary place.
THE BACKGROUND
SheffieldGeneral Cemetery opened in 1836 as one of the first commercial burial grounds in Britain. The opening of the Cemetery coincided with the introduction of Civil Registration in Britain which made the registration of all Births, Marriages and Deaths the responsibility of local authorities rather than that of the Church.
The Cemetery closed in 1978 and today it is listed as a special conservation area, one of only six such sites in South Yorkshire. It is also listed on the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL
I think that a large part ...
Advantages: Good variety of bars and shops, easily accesible, good atmosphere Disadvantages: Some shop prices are quite high
's largest recreation areas lie directly off Ecclesall Road. These are the Botanical Gardens, Endcliffe Park and in my opinion one of Sheffield's finest little gems, the SheffieldGeneral Cemetery.
Ecclesall Road is within easy walking distance of the city centre, leading off from the bottom of one of the main pedestrianised shopping areas known as The Moor. From here a subway crosses under the busy dual carriageway, St Mary's Gate and as you come up for air at the other side, you have arrived at the bottom of Ecclesall Road.
The first thing that you will quickly notice is that there is a very lively street life, many of the café's and bars have tables and chairs that spill out onto the pavement and especially during the summer months, there is an almost Mediterranean ambiance.
The Pamona is a popular bar that is found at the end ...
Advantages: Good music, Good atmosphere, Good DJ Disadvantages: Can get VERY busy at weekends
of old school rockers and bikers, but dont let this put you off. The beer is cheapish, the seats are comfy and the atmosphere is lively. Although the clientel can seem a little intimidating at first, i've never seen any problems in the pub and everyone is generally friendly.
Beer prices for Sheffield are fairly good, you can get cheaper in another pub although you wont get the atmosphere or the rock music. To give you some idea a bottle of newcastle Brown is about £1:80.
I'd recommend the place to any rock fan. ...
