A suitable destination for a Saturday night of intoxication in Sheffield has proved to be a constant source of debate within the student community.
A delicate blend is needed to satisfy the average students social needs that combines some quality tunes, minimal attitude and a classy venue. All this must be delivered at a price that won’t deprive you of a shopping budget for the next week. However finding a place that fits these criteria is somewhat of a struggle.
Here is a blow-by-blow guide of some of the Saturday night delicacies I have sampled
The strong stench of cheese has filled the air; it must be the ever-popular party night that goes under the name of Pop tarts. Held in the student union this is a two room concoction of 60s 70s in the Fusion and 80s and 90s in the Foundry. To ensure entry buy your £3.50 ticket early in the week, hold your plastic pint glasses aloft and toast the lowest Saturday night prices. Drink till you drop comforted by the fact that there is minimal chance of a scrap. A cracking atmosphere but as Chesnee proclaims he is the “one and only” for the third time that night, the cheese is suffocating and the lure of a greasy kebab is too strong to resist.
Located on Division Street, the forum is the stomping ground for your average FHM boy. So pull your denim jacket colour up with pride, gel up that hair, pull on those white trainers and lets get down with those groovy beats. There is quite a mellow atmosphere and a refreshing musical flavour; this seems to be where the cool Sheffield locals hang out. Drinks that won’t break the bank and with no entrance fee this is a must try bar that is open until 1.
As you venture further into town, one can be lured by the innocent colourful exterior of "flares". As I parted with my four pounds I unsuspectingly ventured down the stairs to be greeted by an army of middle-aged local ladies tearing up the illuminated dance floor. There seemed to be an odd combination of clientele in this establishment and not a student in sight. Some difficulty was encountered in distinguishing the lads from the lasses, were they ugly women or men dressed as women? This scary reality, the extortionate drink prices and 70s music suggest that this is worth a one off visit for novelty value alone.
The huge red mirror windowed eyesore that stands menacingly at the edge of the town centre is none other than Kingdom. The place is deprived of personality; loose your mates at your peril chances are you’ll spend the rest of the night tracking them down. Greeted in the queue by an endless line of skin-headed beefcakes in short sleeve black shirts, enter at your own risk! Your typical Saturday night meat market.
For your weekly dose of trance look no further than Gatecrasher at the republic. Republic is a superb venue and this famous night is a must try, with enough stamina keep on going to the early hours. Prices varied from about £12-20
