Having been a Shell Smart card user since its launch in 1994, I thought it would be worth considering how the new "Pluspoints" scheme compared in terms of what you got for your money. In 1994, each £6 spent earned you 1 airmile. If you spent £11.99, you still got 1 airmile. In 1998 the ... Read review

Lower fuel economy - fewer airmiles to the gallon

Advantages: Reward for essential purchase
Disadvantages: Slow to kick off scheme, a bit stingey

Having been a Shell Smart card user since its launch in 1994, I thought it would be worth considering how the new "Pluspoints" scheme compared in terms of what you got for your money.

In 1994, each £6 spent earned you 1 airmile. If you spent £11.99, you still got 1 airmile.

In 1998 the scheme was changed to reward you for each pound spent, but, quite fairly I thought, the exchange rate went down to 1 airmile ...
...would cost £3.13.

I believe that it's good of Shell to reward their customers when buying something we would buy anyway, but it is a bit sad they have decided to be so miserly (because now I have to buy much more to get my free holiday!).  ... more

Shell Plus Points - The negative side

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Questionable benefits. Probably better with Sainsburys ot Tesco's loyalty cards

...gone somewhat wrong for the Shell Smartpoints system. I have had nothing but problems since their change from the old system of what they termed as "smart points" to what they now laughingly call "Plus points". If you wish to contact the company do not try the email. It simply is not replied to, The other problem that crops up is the syndrome of "It's not really out department, You need to speak to . . ." which is a link to drive you insane after ...
...the 6th July this year you could no longer use "Smart Points". They implied they would be changed and redeemed for the same "Pluspoints" and to the same value. A question which naturaly raises itself is, "If nothing has changed then why change the cards name when everything else is the same?" I, as of today, still have my old Smartpoints card. I have been promised the new Pluspoints card more that three times and as yet it still has not been received, ...

Shell petrol stations

Advantages: Excellent petrol, good range of services like airpumps/vacuums etc at most stations
Disadvantages: Ethics? Good employers? Pluspoints!!!

...are dubious about buying from shell because of many reasons, however i am uncertain about where i stand in those questions so i'm not going into those, perhaps another day. What i'm reviewing here is the petrol stations, the shops, the service and the quality of petrol. I drove a Mk2 VW Golf (H-reg), which has done just over 100,000 miles (under average) - it ran ok when i bought it a few years ago, but used to not start every time and misfire when ...
...thing i liked most about shell is the quality of the fuel, i've tried Optimax (more expensive which is why i don't use it everytime) - this is excellent and improves how my car runs almost straight away. Normally however, i just used normal unleaded - since i've used this (and nothing else) in my car, the engine ran quieter and smoother. It started almost everytime, and is much better on longer journeys. I can't say for certain that it was just down ...

Reply to "the Negative side"

Advantages: Cheapest petrol in my area and I get loyalty points - need I say more, except that the garages are always clean and the staff are most friendly.
Disadvantages: None encountered - I can't think of 15 words in total, so - Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water . . . . . . . .

...state that my experiences with Shell and those who man the Plus Points phone lines etc have all been good. All my email enquiries have been answered, all my telephone calls have been answered. Most times I can view my account online and thereby see if it's up to date. Missing points are always added by whoever I have spoken to. (sometimes garages do not always pass on the points info and can be missed off - a phone call, given the receipt is still ...

Margate and the shell grotto

Advantages: one good Cafe and the Shell Grotto
Disadvantages: Dirty, Run down, dog muck, junkies

wasn't much else to do there. I decided to walk up to the shell Grotto but there was a couple of heroine addicts behind me so I decided to let them pass. The approach to Shell Grotto wasn't very nice but once inside it was amazing. The Grotto was discovered in Victorian times but no one is sure of it's exact date or purpose. The tour guide said 1142 AD and believed that the Knights templar used it. The grotto has over 4 million shells on the walls and various symbols from Greek mythology, pagan rituals, and has alot to do with the equinox. For me there was to much info to take in. But it is well worth a visit. After this I walked up Grotty hill, I mean Grotto Hill where I found a fantastic second hand junk shop that was an alladins cave, but when I walked down the other side there was a group of sheepish characters hanging around ...

12 million unexploded shells - Verdun nowadays

Advantages: Likely to be an informative visit, with plenty of food for thought
Disadvantages: Visiting this place may be too depressing for some

Verdun, a ten-month battle that claimed close to a million German and French lives, was as far as I can gather the most brutal of battles, in the most terrible of wars. Verdun was the Great War battle with the highest density of dead per square meter, and to this day some 12 million (yes, this mind-boggling figure has been confirmed) unexploded shells still lie buried in the soil around the town. Appallingly, the suffering is still not entirely over – as late as 1991, 36 Frenchmen were killed whilst attempting to exhume unexploded shells still left over from three-quarters of a century previously. Verdun itself was never taken during the battle, which lasted from February to December, 1916. Thus, apart from the Cathedral, which was hit by a stray German shell at some point during the battle, the rest of Verdun is much like any ...

Review of General: France

A grand old house in need of urgent care

Advantages: Location, external views, quiet tranquil setting.
Disadvantages: A conference centre that lacks atmosphere or warmth for individual tourists.

This is a grand victorian gothic house, set in spectacular countryside. It has recently been taken over by Best Western, who have managed to complete the much needed upgrading of rooms. Unfortunately, it remains predominantly a basic run of the mill conference centre, catering for one night delegate stays. The inside is stripped of most of its original furnishings, that leave it with a bare institutinal, school like atmosphere. Do not expect to see fresh flowers, antiques, or stylish furnishings. This is a functional, basic accommodation that is hidden behind a majestic external shell . Staff are generally young and inexperienced, and service at dinner and breakfast can be sporadic and inept. It has so much potential, but seriously lacks a tangable warmth and welcome that would entice you back. for a second visit. ...
