I have been to Woodbury Common a couple of times and know several people who have too. Mody of us are of the same opinion..it's great. However, if you are going to be doing any shopping in New York City the likely hood is that you will be able to find everything you need in the likes of Macy's, Century 21, Old Navy, etc.
If you're passing Woodbury Common, and you have the time (there are loads of shops) call in, but I don't know if I would make it a day trip if there were other sights I might miss due to it..
It is very clean and family friendly though and pretty easy to find by car , if you have someone who can map read. The road signs in the USA take a little while to get used to. Also beware of the tolls. They are cheap, but sometimes you get a ticket which you then give to the next toll and the price depends on how are you ...

We booked this hotel as a top secret hotel through lastminute.com, paying £86 for the room for the night of Saturday 26th Septmeber 2009. For anyone who isn't familiar with lastminute's top secret system you basically get a star rating and description, but not the name of the hotel before you book. However, for London hotels if you put the description into Google you can easily find out which one matches the description, so we knew what we were getting before we booked.
We arrived by Tube from King's Cross station to St. Paul's Underground station. From here the hotel is fairly easy to find. Just follow the signs for the cathdral then look for Godliman Street on the other side of the cathedral and you can't miss it. The transport links to the hotel are good ...
