Birmingham is a booming city, new bars and restaurants open all the time, but in the field of Japanese restaurants, I cannot say we are spoilt for choice. So when Shogun Teppan Yaki opened last year, it felt like a useful addition to city centre. Located in the Mailbox, which is one the most pleasant parts of town (and, to go with it one of the most expensive), Shogun is the third Japanese restaurant in the City Centre, but is somehow different to the other two: it has a sushi conveyor belt! For those not familiar with Japanese cuisine, let me explain: instead of having a menu and choosing the sushi you want, you sit down in front of conveyor belt on which there are a variety of sushi, maki etc... and whenever something looks appealing, you just pick it up! so you can have exactly what you want, and exactly how much you want. The drawback is that it turns out to be an expensive system. Each little plate, which contains either two sushi or six maki rolls, costs between £2.50 and £3.50, so you're looking at spending around £15 without any drinks. If sushi is not youru thing, then they also have teppan-yaki, which is basically when you sit around a huge metal plate, order your food and it is cooked on front of you. Another cool thing to do! if you are more in a hurry, or on a tight budget, they have a special offer which gives you one noodle dish and a drink for a fiver, ad believe me the food is absolute quality, and the quantity is huge. So if you feel rich , or you have something special to celebrate, go to the Mailbox and sit down in Shogun for something a bit different!
