Sibelius Monument

Sibelius Monument

One of the sights I was most excited about seeing in Helsinki was the memorial to Sibelius, Finland's greatest composer. I'm not a particular fan of Sibelius (although I do recognize some of his work) but I had seen photographs of the monument and it had captured my imagination. The memorial ... Read review

Pipe Dreams

Advantages: A stunning sight, a fun but stimulating place to visit
Disadvantages: Can get a bit crazy when Japanese coach parties arrive

...not a particular fan of Sibelius (although I do recognize some of his work) but I had seen photographs of the monument and it had captured my imagination. The memorial is, in fact, one of the most popular "tourist attractions" in Helsinki though I am not sure how many of the people who visit it are familiar with his work. However there are several museums in Finland dedicated to Sibelius so I wouldn't be surprised if many visitors come ...
...MONUMENT

Sibelius died in 1957but the monument was not unveiled until 1967. The decision to have a monument at all was that of the Sibelius Society, founded after the composer's death; the money for the project came mostly from public fundraising and the budget for the project was fairly modest. Forty sculptors from all over Europe submitted designs and five went through to the next round. The winning design was by Finnish sculptor ... more

Helsinki - a few ideas.

Advantages: It's a 'different' place to visit!!
Disadvantages: Seems expensive!!

the summer do catch the PUB Tram, it is a converted tram, and it goes on a sightseeing tour, so you can really enjoy watching the world go by! Unfortunately not included in the normal Helsinki Card or Helsinki Transport Tourist ticket schemes, and it?s more than a normal tram fare due to it?s special facilities!! We?ve had two trips to Suomenlinna, the most memorable was on the ferry through the ice last winter, but it was also fun in June when the sun was scorching! The Rock Church is different, it?s partially carved out of the rock and worth a look, and everyone has to see the Sibelius monument!! If you like museums, look into the Helsinki Card, it does have a few other discounts. If you only want to get around it?s worth checking out the HKL Transport Tourist cards; these only cover transport on buses, trams and ferries in ...

Review of Helsinki (Finland)

I loved it - by the Finnish

Advantages: Great architecture, good food, lots to do
Disadvantages: Closure of many attractions in the off season, expensive by UK prices

. Not far from the Olympic Stadium is the Sibelius Monument, one of Helsinki's most famous sights. It's frequently condemned as a poor piece of art but try telling that to the hordes of tourists who pull up next to it and get out of the sightseeing coaches to take photographs. How many of them do you think would recognize a piece by Sibelius anyway? Of course I went - I don't only get excited by functionalist architecture, you know! If the truth be told it is a bit kitsch but it does provide some interesting opportunities for keen photographers; there is a smaller sculpture which is a portrait of Sibelius but the main part is a collection of pipes of differing sizes like a church organ. What I really liked about Helsinki was the good mix between the natural and the manmade environment. There is no better place to demonstrate this than ...
