Taormina, Sicily
Advantages: historicaly interesting, prety town, great views Disadvantages: long train journet from Palermo
Taormina is a very pretty town on the Eastern coast of Sicily. We took a very slow train journey from Palermo along the North coast, which took the best part of a day, having to change and wait in Messina. When you get to Taormina station you will find yourself at the bottom of the hill so you would need to hire a taxi or wait for a local bus to take you up to the town. The buses didn't seem too predictable but then we were arriving on a Sunday. ... ...more reliable. However, when you get up into the town you will realise that the journey is well worth it. Taormina is a very pretty historic town. Visit the amphitheatre for fantastic views of Mount Etna. A walk up a steep path behind the town affords more spectacular vies of Etna and the coast
The town can basically be navigated from the main drag of shops and restaurants. Typically for Italy there is a vast range of prices. This can also be quite ...

A little taste of Greece - with italian ice cream
Advantages: Beautiful city, lots of things to see and do Disadvantages: Very hot in the summer
Syracuse lies on the south-eastern tip of Sicily, pointing towards the Mediterranean, almost provocatively. I found myself there, due to a happy marraige of chance and circumstance, and thought it was one of the most pleasant cities that I have ever come across. Like much of Sicily, the influence of the Greeks is very evident in Syracuse, (one of her most famous sons is Archimedes) which is most famous for the Greek Amphitheatre which they left behind. ... ...I was only in Syracuse a day, which wasn't really enough, it would have been nice to have had about 3 or 4 days there at least and if you're in southern Italy, really do give it a shot, I loved it there, not least, because I had had no idea what to expect. The sicilians are a dream as well, very cute and very friendly... but that's another story altogether! ...

In the shadow of Etna
Advantages: The Volcano, the food, the black beach Disadvantages: the horse meat stall in the market (don't buy anything from a butchers with a cute photo of a horse outside!_
Catania lies on the eastern coast of Sicily and is, historically and culturally a part of the 'Greek' part of the Island (as opposed to the arabic West of Sicily). The most striking thing about the city is the constantly puffing, and frequently erupting volcano which colours (sometimes quite literally) the city in a magical manner. Some people don't have the temperament for Sicily, the cities here don't have the manicured edges of Tuscany or the ... ...of Italy. So Catania itself takes a little getting used to. It doesn't have the beauty of Syracuse and Palermo probably has more immediate attractions in it. It has a fine Sicilian Baroque architectural style, best seen around the Piazza del Duomo with it's famous elephant statue - the symbol of the city. This same said statue is carved from volcanic rock and, as I was cheerfully told on any number of occasions, was smashed by drunken Englishmen ...

A good restaurant in Cefalu
Advantages: fresh food Disadvantages: none
I have recently been in Cefalu.
Below is the address and details of a restaurant I can recommend.
Ristorante "Paradiso Club"
Address: Via dei Mulini 18/20 - CEFALU'
Tel. 0921-423900 - Fax. 0921-423990
They seem to have a very large selection of starters in this place.
I had a fish salad, while my colleague had grilled aubergines togetehr with other grilled vegetables. Both dishes were very fresh.
For the first meal, I had pasta with alici, ... ...ncasciata alla cifalutana, apparently the speciality of Cefalu.
We then both had fish, sword fish myself and grilled fish my colleague.
The waiters claimed everything in their restaurant is fresh of the dayand that fish is delivered or bought directly from fishermen.
In my experience, this seems to be the case.
We also had the house white wine, which was quite strong. Their wine list is good.
We did not have time for dessert, but the table next ...
