Sigiriya (Sri Lanka)

... We left from Wadduwa in the south and passed through the outer zones of Colombo as the hours in the back of the bus racked up and the city and towns quickly became the odd village amongst farmland and rainforest, and just after midday we arrived at the obscure Sigiriya Rock, shaped a ... When Biscuits Given As Tips, Success Is Variable

Advantages: Lots
Disadvantages: Not Many

...we arrived at the obscure Sigiriya Rock, shaped a bit like a giant Wrekin with the sides chopped off for those who know Shropshire.

It was seven hours since we'd left our hotel but we did stop briefly on the way for a walk through some ruins and a museum of the best bits of the ruin, but I got distracted by the scores of monkeys that were running around everywhere and the street peddlers trying persistently to sell me rubbish souvenirs ...
...than it was very hot and they were rediscovered amongst overgrown jungle in the late 19th century by a British explorer who must have been really quite surprised.

The final 3 miles or so were pretty much dirt roads leading to Sigiriya, a World Heritage site and the position of a palace fortress that can be reached by climbing the 1202 steps to the top. I opted to do 2 at a time.
It was a daunting prospect that was seized upon ... more

Sigiriya - All human life is there

Advantages: Superb views. Sense of achievement
Disadvantages: Don't go on a "Full Moon" day

Sigiriya - All human life is there.....especially if you are silly enough to go on a public holiday! This rock is an amazing sight, rising as it does from sweltering jungle and the fortifications at the top give fantastic views over a large part of central Sri Lanka. However, the reality of the climb up "iffy" staircases pinioned into the rock, and a very tedious "one step every five seconds" spiral staircase take away the romance. At least it was ...
...so sweaty when I got to the top, I forgot to take photos. The breeze is no use since it's as hot as you are, and the humidity makes sweating less effective....mmmm nice. I'm afraid all I could think about was the pool at the Hotel Sigiriya, from where you have a superb view of the rock. This is a nice place to stay, with good local food - I ate spicy food for at least 2 of the 3 daily meals with no ill effects whatsoever, although it did ruin my ...

Sigiriya

Advantages: Knowledge on History
Disadvantages: wasps threat

. Paintings in Sigiriya are world famous. There is a version that these paintings and the paintings at Ajantha group in India are almost alike. Paintigs of Sigiriya are one of the most significant pieces of classical paintings of Sri Lanka. When you are entering to the Sigiriya fortress you will be able to get this experience. It is wonderful because the entrance is made like an opened mouth of lion. The most significant feature of the Rock was the lion staircase leading to the palace garden. Now the colossal paws and a mass of bricks masonry that surround the ancient lime stone steps are still remaining and they are giving an idea of the size and shape of the lion figure. You can find wasp hives when you are climbing up. They are staying silently. They will not harass us if we do not make noises or harass them. Actually you do ...

Review of Citadel of Sigiriya - Lion Rock, Sigiriya

The Real Sri Lanka

Advantages: Excitement, Beautiful, Different, Adventure
Disadvantages: Bombings, Crazy car drivers, poverty and begging

will show you the parts of Sri Lanka that the tourists don't see. On the trip take in the following as a must, Punnewella Elephant Orphanage, Kandy, Sigiriya and the Turtles that are found on the South East coast. Find spice farms, and buy all you want it is so cheap. Be prepared for the craziest driving in the world, they mount pavements, and drive 4 a breast to get somewhere although most of the roads are dirt tracks. Its an adventure more than a holiday, and I recommend it to anyone. All the reports on the Tamals are true but they will not bother you or harm you, there were 10 bombings when I was there for the millenium and it never spoilt a thing. Go and enjoy but go with the belief that you want this adventure rather than you need a break. ...

Serendipity do da zippity-ay

Advantages: A little bit beautiful, interesting and friendly
Disadvantages: A little bit unchallenging

hillside (it is not known as ?cloud forest? for nothing) to obscure the view. While up there you can take a detour to the see the attractive Baker?s Falls, but you cannot stray far from the beaten track. Signs are there to warn that: ?Walking and riding off path is extremely prohibited.? ****** ****** ****** ****** ****** ****** The next day, Jaya declares himself to be ?a little bit well? again, and from the hill country we are driven down through the equally scenic Ella Gap to the southern Dry Zone. It is time to turn our attention to Sri Lanka?s wild life. We have already seen plenty without really trying: monkeys galore, water buffalo, jackals, monitor lizards, mongeese, even a wild elephant grazing beside the lake below the Lion Rock at Sigiriya. That was a rare and lucky sighting. Wild elephants are few in ...
