Relaxation in the middle of the madness

Advantages: Peace and quiet; No admission fee for main part
Disadvantages: You'll come away with sore feet and tired limbs

Singapore is a city-state full of hustle and bustle, and just occasionally it's nice to wind down from that. The Botanic Gardens, 25 minutes walk, or 5 minutes taxi ride, from one end of the inimitable Orchard Road, is just the place to get that relaxation you need. With free entry into the Gardens a huge area of peace and quiet opens up to you, and it's easy to spend all day there (as we did). Even easier given the fact that they are open from ...
...to rest from the incessant Singapore heat. We had already been in the gardens a couple of hours, and only seen about a quarter of what was on show! A sculpture area provided some added interest, and then there was the National Orchid Garden. You have to pay five Singaporean dollars to get in here, but it's worth it simply for the history surrounding the state's national flower. So many here were named after famous people who have visited the gardens ...

Asian Civilisations Museum

Advantages: really easy to get to, informative, great surroundings
Disadvantages: too much to see in one visit

We were really lucky when we went as admission was free for Chinese New Year but it isn't very expensive. It is very easy to get to using public transport (bus or MRT) and is near the bars and cafes of Clarke Quay. The building itself is a fantastic old colonial building next to the former parliament and gives some great views over the river. There is plenty to see and it is best to decide before you go which exhibits you want to see as there is ...
...The museum covers all of the civilisations (modern and ancient) in Asia and provides an interesting history of the rise of Asia and the mythology behind it. It covers the religions now found in Asia as well as discussing how they came to be practised. There are plenty of sculptures and images to keep you busy helping to bring alive the similarities and differences between people from different tribes and countries. When we were there we saw a beautiful ...

The best zoo in the world!

Advantages: no enclosures around animals, feel much closer to animals
Disadvantages: a long and tiring day

Singapore Zoo is by far the best zoo/wildlife reserve that I have ever been to - and I've been to a lot in many different countries! There's no cages around any of the animals so everything is free and it's great not to have fences between you and them. The white Bengal tigers are the most amazing - there's just a moat and a vertical hill in between you and I got some great pictures of them being fed and playing in the water without the annoying ...
...as you walk past and there's other animals like huge lizards and big birds just walking past you on the path. There's an Australia section which Steve Urwin helped to create where kangaroos jump across your path. The hippos and polar bears are also amazing as you can see them swimming underwater. There's shows and talks on throughout the day and a big stadium where you can watch the elephants doing tricks. There's also a train that takes you around ...

Fantastic Singapore Adventure

Advantages: Family fun, educational, exciting
Disadvantages: Night time only

...my visit to Singapore. The night safari is a wonderful idea, and extremely clever in terms of layout and accessibility. You board a slow moving tram with a tour guide to keep you informed as you glide through the park with wild animals on either side of you. The animals are nicely lit by minimal lighting hiding in trees and bushes, and as its feeding time you get to see them in all their glory, and feel like you're actually with them in the wild. ...

Forget Sentosa!

Advantages: Free interesting entertaining, excellent photo opportunities
Disadvantages: A bit confusing, run down, difficult to reach by public transport

Don't be surprised if despite having been to singapore several times you have not heard of this magical place. It is the remains of a theme park based on ancient mythology set in the Tiger Balm Gardens. The villa itself was built by the creator of Tiger Balm, but is unfortunately no longer standing. The attraction consists of a startling array of painted cast concrete statues and tableau depicting scenes from chinese mythology, and a bizzare selection ...
...guide book before you start to help reduce confusion if you are not a student of chinese culture and mythology. I would rate this as the single best attraction in Singapore. Outstanding is the "Ten Courts of Hell" which are entered by going into an enormous dragon's mouth. Although in the park's Heyday these were viewed from a boat ride a walk through allows the best opportunity to view the full details of the scenes showing the specific punishments ...
