Singapore's most popular boutique hotel is the world famous 104-room Raffles Hotel which today is the preferred option for the well-heeled celebrities and other members of the rich and famous club. It is located in the heart of the business and shopping district at Beach Road. The dear old Raffles was built in 1887 complete with a stunning courtyard, which reputedly has more than 50,000 plants. It was the colonial hotel par excellence and attracted such famous figures as Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham. Despite recently being refurbished the place retains its colonial-style atmosphere with its very high ceilings, the whirring ceiling fans, exotoc Oriental carpets, wonderful period-style furnishings, its signature restaurants serving up fine cuisine and highly attentive hotel staff. Concessions to the modern era have been made in the shape of a swimming pool,a health club, and a 24-hour Business Centre. The Raffles gave birth to the famous Singapore gin sling and not surprisingly its bars are immensely popular. The place even has its very own Museum which showcases memorabilia from the time it first opened its doors for business. There is also a spacious, elegant,Reading Room which houses an extensive collection of business publications and other relevant reference materials. Guests can hire personal computers, lap tops and mobile phones and access to the Internet is provided for guests. Singapore's "Grand Old Lady" continues to offer unashamed luxury and highly personalised service but it all comes at a price. Room rates vary from S$650 to as much as S44,000 for its Grand Hotel Suite.!
