I've been to Amsterdam a few times now so I know the standard of basic accomodation. After my last stay in Amsterdam in November I can fully recommend the Singel Hotel. The hotel itself is located on the singel canal. It is only a 10 minute walk from the Train Station so it's very handy. Just a point though, when you get off the train look for the small white travel information building across the road. They sell the 3 day tram tickets which you may want if you want to go to the Reiksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum.. To get to the hotel from the Station come out of the main exit and head right. When you get to to the Singel you will be asked to pay up front for your stay. This is because of the amount of people doing a 'runner' so if you aren't happy with it ask if you can see the room before you pay. If you arrive before your room is ready they will happily store your luggage for you (you only pay for the room once it is ready.) We stayed on the top floor which is a non smoking floor. We were in a triple room which was big enough for the 3 nights we were there but if we were staying for longer the wardrobe space may have been fought for!! The room consisted of 3 single beds a wardrobe, and a dressing table. there was 3 plug sockets available though the electrics in the bedside table of the bed nearest the window looked a bit dodgy!! There was a television with some English chanels including BBC 1. The bathroom was more like a wetroom with just a shower, sink and toilet. there were clean fresh towels every day and they even provided shampoo and shower gel. The only thing lacking was tea and coffee making facilities. All in all the room was clean and the beds had clean linen every day which was nice. Breakfast was continental though they stopped serving at 10am. This may be a problem for people who like a lie-in after sampling the delights of amsterdam nightlife!! There was plenty of food-breads, cheeses, eggs, cereals and good coffee! The staff were really helpful and they speak great English so if you have any problems don't hesitate in letting them know and they'll do their best to help you. The hotel is a great place if you are on a budget but want a decent nights sleep in a comfy clean bed. Its a 3 star, so don't expect a gym and swimming pool! There is a bar but it's just a few drinks behind reception where you can then take your drinks up to your rooms. All in all I recommend the Singel hotel to single sex groups, couples, and families. It must be ok as i've booked to go again in June and then again in November!!
Advantages: Central location and value for money Disadvantages: None
When choosing a hotel in Amsterdam the traveller is faced with a multitude of choices and you're never sure exactly which hotel is good or bad. I hope this opinion helps to clear the confusion.
We booked the Hotel Jolly Carlton from the internet where we got an excellent deal.
The Hotel Jolly Carlton is owned by an Italian chain of hotels which have properties throughout Europe. It is situated right next to the Singel Flower Market and some of the rooms are lucky enough to overlook the Muntplein which chimes each hour on the hour 24 hours a day. The hotel reception has a luxurious feel and marble abounds. As first impressions count so much we knew we were in for a treat. The receptionist greeted us with typical Amsterdam cheer and smiles. The check-in process was quick and soon we were being portered to our room ...
