Singh's Restaurant

I often buy vouchers for restaurants in Newcastle as I always think its worth giving them a go.

This is written from the point of view of 3 adults and one child eating at the restaurant on a Friday evening.

LOCATION…

The restaurant is situated just outside the city centre and there is plenty of on road parking close by. When we first found the restaurant it was all a little disappointing, and first impressions were certainly not great. Situated in almost a unit of buildings this is all pebble dashed grey ugliness and looks like the worst type of social club. However, undeterred, we decided not to judge a book by the cover and try it out.

THE RESTAURANT…

When we got inside, it was almost like stepping into a different place. The restaurant is located down some stairs with comfy sofa at the bottom of the stairs and lots of paintings and pictures. Inside the restaurant it was all red seats and dark wood with low lighting and plenty of drapey material to section off areas, as well as lots of potted plants. There is plenty to interest diners and Little Miss was especially taken with the very large elephant in the corner along with a number of other large statues.

There is a long bar area complete with bar stools but because we had a reservation, we were taken immediately to our seats. Although the restaurant is in an unusual place, it did fill up quite quickly and there was a nice buzz about the place with none of that overly loud music playing.

THE MENU…

We were quickly brought the large fake leather menu which offered the usual selection of dishes and left to make up our minds. While we were waiting our drinks order was taken and drinks quickly brought to the table. I had a glass of white wine and one thing I noted was the wine glass which I especially liked.

The menu features a range of dishes including traditional and balti dishes and there is also a section devoted to vegetarian dishes, which is a bonus as one of our party is vegetarian. There the full menu can be viewed on www.singhsrestaurant.co.uk.

I had the Chicken Jalfrezie costing £6.50. The pieces of chicken breast were nice and tender and there were plenty of peppers and a tasty but not too spicey pepper sauce. The vegetarian in our group had Punjabi Chana Masala which was only £3.50 and consisted of Chick peas cooked roasted spices. It wasn’t to my taste but he who had ordered the dish thought it was delicious and there was certainly plenty of it. We also ordered a Chicken Tikka Makhani which cost £6.95. This had a creamy tomato sauce and again was well presented and plenty of it.Little Miss had the Chicken Karahi costing £6.50. She tends to like this dish when we have Indian meals and this time was no exception. Again the chicken breast was nicely diced and tender and there were plenty of peppers although perhaps a tad few many onions.

There are a selection of different rices available including mushroom garlic and steamed rice but my favourite, vegetable wasn’t included on the menu. However, when I asked they said they could make some and so I did get a good portion of vegetable rice. The rices aren’t expensive, with the most expensive being £2.50.

VERDICT…

This is definitely a “don’t judge a book by its cover “ place. It certainly wasn’t especially nice outside and its not the kind of place I would go if I was taking people out for the night to showcase the city! However, the décor is nice and I liked the layout of the restaurant, since it was made up of smaller dining areas. The staff are helpful and polite, the food is good and plentiful and the whole place is clean.

Well worth a visit for the food if you can pick up some vouchers.

Thanks for reading
