Earlier this year, I rented a car when I was on a one-day trip in Brussels, Belgium. Previously, I always used public transport or taxi when I was visiting a foreign city. So this was the very first time in my life to rent a car, and I'd like to share my experience form that with you.
Why did I want to rent a car at all? Well, when I booked my flight ticket to Brussels, there was an ad on the Internet offering 'fly and drive smart', and as I always wanted to try driving one of those Smart cars, I decided to rent a car in Brussels.
Soon after, I found out that this special offer was no longer valid on the day when I intended to visit Brussels, but I was already familiar with the idea, I wanted to rent a car, even if this was not the Smart.
I searched the web for interesting offers. I visited the web sites of Avis, Hertz, Budget and others. Finally, I found a very good offer on the e-sixt site (www.e-sixt.com).
The e-sixt site on the internet is very easy to use. You just select the country where you want to go to, and then you see special offers for this country. e-sixt always have so-called Internet Specials, low price offers which are available only if you book via the Internet.
And booking online is quite simple. You select the country, then the town, and within the town the exact place where you want to get your car (assisted by drop down lists), date and time, and the car category (you cannot choose a specific car, just the category, and they give you 2-3 examples of what cars are included in this category), and where and when you want to return your car.
Immediately, they confirm availability of your chosen car and they quote the price.
If you then want to confirm your reservation, you just have to enter all your personal details and your credit card number, and then to confirm your booking. A few moments later, you receive a confirmation by e-mail (print it and take it with you).
When I arrived at Brussels airport, I went directly to the e-sixt counter, where my car was ready for collection. Of course, you need to show your driving license and your passport.
The lady at the counter was very friendly and explained everything to me what I had to know. She offered extra insurance, which I accepted.
The only negative detail was that most of my personal data that I had already entered via the Internet, was no longer in the system, so she had to re-input it. But it took no longer than five minutes in total, and then I could drive my car (Opel Corsa).
When I returned to the airport in the evening, the counter was already closed, I just had to put the keys into a box, and that's it.
In total I had to pay BEF 3172 for one day (incuding optional insurance), which is approx. GBP 49, and this amount was correctly charged to my VISA account a few weeks later.
In summary, it was very simple to use e-sixt's online booking facility, and the service and price was OK as well (especially if you go for the Internet Specials), so that I can recommend e-sixt in case you want to rent a car.

I use Sixt fairly regularly, as we get a discount for SAP staff :) I've yet to have any problems with them, and I find that if you book at short notice, you often get a free upgrade to the next available class of car!
