Tucked away in the new dockside development at Leith (quite close to the Malmaisonhotel if you happen to be staying there), Skippers, is a humble-looking eatery down a cobbled road next to the water. The decor is simple, wonky, well-used wooden tables and chairs, with plenty of curisoties reminding you of the area's past industry.
The atmosphere is congenial and friendly, the staff, helpful and friendly without taking themselves too seriously. When we went there were couple, families and businessmen from the nearby Scottish Executive, rubbing shoulders.
Suffice to say, the food is awesome. Absolutely fantastic. The mussels were big and juicy in a creamy sauce, that made the best Moules Marinere my partner had ever had. The Arbroath smokey was a subtler, more delicate smoked fish which was delicious although a little fiddley to eat.
The main courses of chargrilled monkfish tail and turbot steak were generous, delicately flavoured with plenty of vegetables, well cooked to round it off. The fish was superbly cooked, tender and moist and massive.
If you've got any room left the chocolate pear tart and cheese platter completed the meal nicely. The wine list looks good and isn't terribly expensive, £15-20 will get you a bottle, which perfectly compliments your meal. I wouldn't hesitate in going back, next time in Edinburgh I'll be there.
