...Peaceful, tranquil and fragrant, a visit to the Chelsea Physic Garden is aroma therapy in the round and one of the surprising treats of London. Tucked in neatly between Royal Hospital Road and the Embankment, it is easily reached yet miles away in feeling from the bustling Kings Road. Once you are there you are you have escaped from the modern world.
The Chelsea Physic Garden is a bit like a giant time capsule. It dates from 1673 when the Society of Apothecaries of London decided they needed somewhere to cultivate their medicinal plants. They leased some land along the Thames in Chelsea, then little more than a market gardening centre with some posh houses attached. The Apothecaries travelled from their London headquarters to the Garden on their ornate river barge. In the pre-Embankment days the Garden was directly on the river...
