Give me just a little more vine....
Advantages: Interesting, picturesque, free, easy to get to Disadvantages: Only a small exhibition, you can taste its wine
...the river front. The “Hiša stara trta” (the house of the Old Vine”) is signposted from the main road but I don’t think it is very clear where you need to go). Quite simply, at the “Stari most” (the old bridge) on the city side, take the stairs beside the old casino and at the bottom head for the water ahead of you. Turn right and after a handful of bars, you’ll see the house of the Old Vine on your right. The vine stretches almost across the entire ... ...and the cutting of the Stara trta is the culmination of the Stara Trta Festival. The festival takes place at various locations in the city and celebrates not just the local wine tradition but Slovenian produce in general as well as things cultural. We attended the opening of the festival, held at the Stara trta this year. A ladies choir, singing traditional country songs performed, as well as a Slovenian brass band. A rafting event takes place as ...

The King of the Castles
Advantages: Lots of interesting stuff, cheap admission, great views Disadvantages: A few dull exhibits
The pretty Slovenian town of Ptuj (pronounced Puh-too-ee) is reputed to be the country's oldest settlement and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The highlight of a visit to Ptuj is the impressive castle that guards over the town from a position on a high flat plateau. Travelling to or from the far north east of Slovenia by train gives you the best overall view of the castle, in my opinion Slovenia's most attractive.
... ...house" than castle.
Today Ptuj Castle is a museum and is part of the wider "Pokranjinski Muzej Ptuj" - a regional museum collection that includes a former prison, a former Dominican monastery and a Roman brick kiln. There are some excellent permanent collections but the superb quality of the temporary exhibitions means that there is always something worth making a return visit for; Ptuj is just a thirty minute bus ride from our place in Maribor ...

Dravograd's Dungeon
Advantages: Free; interesting; a brief diversion Disadvantages: Need to arrange with tourist office; small, not much to see
...today it contains a small museum which can be visited by arrangement with the Tourist Information Office. During the Second World War, Slovenia (all of Yugoslavia, more correctly) was under German occupation and the town of Dravograd was used as a headquarters for the Koroska area. Anti-German sentiment was strong and the local partisans were well organised, resulting in lots of attacks, and attempted attacks, on German targets. The Gestapo had little ... ...We had read about the museum in our Lonely Planet and asked at the Tourist Information Office whether a visit would be possible that day. Having asked us no less than three times if we would definitely be there, the assistant agreed to meet us outside the town hall building at 1.00pm. The building is on the left hand side of the main road through town as the road starts to climb, just after you’ve come across the road bridge over the Drava. Quite ...

The Versailles of Maribor ? Mais non!
Advantages: The house stands in beautiful grounds, entrance is cheap Disadvantages: Exhibtion is of limited interest
Betnava Dvorec is a Baroque mansion situated to the south of Maribor, near the small village of Razvanje. I am ashamed to say that it took us over a year to learn of its existence even though our flat is only ten minutes walk from it. We recently took my parents there, mainly to see the beautiful grounds, but while we were there we learned that there is a museum inside the house and decided to go inside. The candy pink house is now only three quarters ... ...by John Paul II at Betnava Dvorec itself. The very modern papal throne that was designed for the visit is on display here along with portraits of Slomšek. You’ll find statues of Slomšek, and things named after him all over the city so I found it quite interesting to learn more about him.
Upstairs there are no exhibits but you can see three once grand rooms that are slowly being restored to their former glory. In the centre is the Knights Hall, now ...

short flights over the Slovenian coast
Advantages: good value Disadvantages: none
Portoroz aerodrom is a small international aerport on the Slovenian coast. With Croasia and Italy so close, many small aeroplane flights come in and out of this busy, but highly efficient, little aerport. For the visitor it is also possible to arrange a short flight over the locality,a half hour flight costing around 5,000 sit. You get a good view of the salt pans the coastal area and nieghbouring countries, the main towns, harbours and hilltop villages. ...
