Diamond review  Hum-BLED by the perfect Alpine setting

Advantages: Beautful scenery, kremsnita, plenty for children and adults
Disadvantages: Crowds and traffic on busy days, not cheapest food, lack of self-catering accommodation

...things to see are the lake and the castle. The lake is not particularly big (at its longest and widest 2.12km by 1.38km, maximum depth 30.6m), but is very scenic with an island in the middle. For reasons of space, I shall describe the lake, island and the traditional boats (pletna) in a separate review (scope for more pictures as well). The castle sits atop a 130m hill on the north side of the lake, and is reached by a road which snakes up the back. ...
...the eastern end of the lake (the end where the road from the airport and Ljubljana comes in) are very pleasant for walking in, and when we were there seemed to be a craft market every day. I imagine at times other than peak season, this would not be the case. There are a couple of interesting objects in the gardens – a chess set in a glass class showing the position after the Pirc defence, Vasja Pirc being a Slovenian grandmaster. Further round the ...

Budget Skiing in Kransjka Gora

Advantages: Cheap and friendly resort
Disadvantages: Limited skiing for the more advanced.

Having skied in Bulgaria for the last 3 seasons we decided it was time for a change of scenery. Given that the French, Austrian, Swiss and Italian Alps are so expensive we chose to go to the Slovenian resort of Kransjka Gora. The flight from Stansted took only 2 hours and we were soon on the road to the resort which is situated on the borders of Austria and Italy and only 40 minutes drive from Ljubljana airport. The resort appealed to our group of ...
...cheap Apres Ski and other local attractions (sledging skating etc). We stayed at the Hotel Kompas on a half board basis. The hotel was clean, comfortable, provided a good varied buffet each evening and morning. Our rooms had lovely views of the snow-capped Julian Alps. The hotel also had a pool and health spa facilities - ideal for a relaxing break from the slopes. The ski runs are a bit limited and after a couple of days all had been explored ...

Slovenia - go to Bovec.

Advantages: Spectacular scenery, friendly people, extremely cheap!!
Disadvantages: The roads aren't great.

I travelled to Slovenia in Easter 2006 and stayed in Bovec and Ljubljana. Bovec is a small, fairly remote town situated by the Soca river. the scenery is spectacular - mountains and river. The main activities in the location are based on the Soca river - it was used for the white water kayaking world championships. This was the main reason why we went here. there a number of adventure sports companies in the town but we used "Top Rafting" and I ...
...guarantee an unforgettable experience. The activitied we chose were: white water kayaking, rafting, hydro-speeding and canyoning. I was a complete novice but it is catered for all abilities. We went in the first week of the tourist season and I would recommend travelling at this time. We were virtually the only people there which meant the rafting company and the local restuarant did everything possible to meet our demands. It is cheaper to travel ...

(Summertime) Pleasures of Piran

Advantages: Beautiful, historic, great restaurants
Disadvantages: Everything closed in November! Too quiet for some

...GETTTING THERE Whilst Piran is only about ninety minutes from Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana getting there can be a little problematic. The train only takes you a far as Koper, an industrial town slightly north of Piran, but still on the coast - from there you need to take a bus, a twenty minute ride. The train takes roughly the same amount of time as the bus so you may as well go by bus all the way. If you go by car you avoid all the detours that ...
...the small peninsular on which Piran sits. It is possible to visit Piran as a day trip (or longer of course if you prefer) from north-eastern Italy (from Trieste by bus or ferry - the latter in the high season only) or from northern Croatia (Pula is less than an hour away). WHAT ITS LIKE Piran is a town that has been virtually untouched by the march of time; this is due mainly to the fact that it stands on a narrow peninsula where there is no room ...

Celje - closed on Sundays

Advantages: Pretty Old Town; a few good museums; interesting walks
Disadvantages: Few eateries open Sundays and evenings

...close to the centre of Celje, the most popular being the climb to the Old Castle. We made the ascent through the woods and came back down along the road. When walking in Slovenia it is the custom to smile and say hello to everyone you meet and since the whole town is out walking that mounts up to a lot of "Dober dans". The earliest section of the castle dates from the first half of the thirteenth century and there have been further additions in the ...
...time the largest fortress complex in Slovenia containing a whole community within its walls. The castle fell into disuse in the eighteenth century and rebuilding has been going on since the end of the nineteenth century. Visitors can now wander around the walls and take in the tremendous views stretching out first over tree covered hills to the snow capped peaks in the distance. At present the reconstructed main tower - Fredericks Tower cannot be ...
