Exploring the Spanish Avantgarde

Advantages: Comprehensive collection of 20th Century Spanish masters
Disadvantages: Ridiculous examples of Minimal "Art"

The Museum Reina Sofia contains the most complete collection worldwide of famous 20th Century Spanish masters such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí, and is worth an extensive visit when travelling to Madrid. The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, so its full name, is one of the three famous museums of fine art in Madrid, a trio which includes the Museo del Prado and the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza. I have discussed the Thyssen Bornemisza at length in my previous opinion, and have recommended it as an introduction to fine arts for the novice. That's because its collection of Impressionism and Expressionism is rather easy to comprehend and enjoy. The third and most famous is the Museo del Prado which covers the earlier periods of Renaissance, Baroque and Rokoko, and culminates in the collection of Spanish masters ...

The Jewel in Havana's Crown

Advantages: An excellent introduction to Havana's charms
Disadvantages: None to note (despite the 'socks')

Back in 2004 I was lucky enough to celebrate the New Year in Havana the capital city of Cuba and vowed if ever I were to return I would spend a few days staying with the lady that is proclaimed to be 'The Jewel of Havana' better known as the Hotel Nacional De Cuba. Needless to say during that first trip I fell in love with the people, the music and the overwhelming ambience of the country and of course Che Guevara (all over again). The Journey?. During my post Christmas blues this year I booked a return trip. We spend a relaxing day in the NH Crystal Resort in the Cayo's and enjoy a few Mojito's before joining the transfer coach which will take us on the 30 minute journey to Jardines Del Rey Airport and after a smooth check in we board our ATR42 Cubanacan flight (which needless to say is an experience in itself if you know your ...

Puts the Tate modern to shame

Advantages: Great transport links, city centre location
Disadvantages: can be difficult to find way in

This foundation/museum/park is in just next to Avenida Boavista in Porto. It has a local taxi rank next to it and plenty of bus stops. The entrance is hidden down a side alley but once you find it you will find yourself in a time warp. The building is 1920s art deco mansion through and through. It has a rolling set of exhibitions of modern Portuguese artists such as Cargaleiro, Silva Vieira as well architects like Tomas Taveira. All of these are done with the original 1920s art deco furniture still in place. This makes you appreciate the art not in clinical setting like the Tate Modern but in a situation where you could really admire it as a live in piece of art, in your bedroom or dinning room. It really shows the impracticalities of certain "celebrated" pieces of art like the dead cow or the dirty bed some people in the UK ...
