Sofitel Westlake isn't right by the lake itself, but take a 2-3 minute walk, and you're there. So for lake viewing, it is more than convenient enough.

From the outside, the hotel doesn't look impressive, especially when compared to other hotels in Hangzhou such as the Radisson, in the city centre, or the Grand Hyatt, which is right by the lake.
One thing that does beat the hotels based in the city centre, is the location. If you have ever been to Hangzhou, then the West Lake area is the best area to stay in - simply because the West Lake is beautiful.

The room was spacious, basic, but very comfortable - to be expected from a business class room. One thing I really liked about the room was the fact that it was supplied with a laptop (IBM Thinkpad) already connected to the internet - very convenient, and also fresh fruit! I love fruit.
The bed was very, very comfortable, and if you ever stay in the Sofitel, make sure you don't oversleep in the morning if you have a meeting, or something else to do in the morning - it gives a fantastic 'sinking' feeling.
If you get a room on the front side of the building, the view is great, but in the particular room I stayed in, the view was of a local apartment complex. It was also quite close, not exactly the nicest sight.
The Chinese restaurant in the hotel is excellent and I would recommend it - also has a balcony area for warm days, where a barbequeue option is normally available. The setting is comfortable, service is again, perfect, and prices are reasonable.
I didn't get a chance to use any other facilities, because the stay was so short, but the staff are friendly, and the stay was great.
The location is also great because it is located on Nanshang road, which has a lot of nice bars and restaurants - conveniently within walking distance.
I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are staying in Hangzhou - of course there other choices in addition, but at 700 RMB per night (depending on the season - this is around 45 pounds), its pretty good value.
