...to explain.... The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum has a slightly unusual structure to say the least. It is basically coil shaped, like an ice cream cone, getting wider as you go up. Note the up - the pathways are slanted slightly so as you go round you also change level so you can go on forever, or at least until the building runs out. This is where the top down approach comes in. Most people go in and pay, and then start walking upwards. By the time ... ...and realise they should have done what I and a few others (who had probably read the same guide book that recommended doing so) did - take the lift to the top floor and start there, letting gravity give you a helping hand on the way down. Now you know the best way to see the works on display, so all that's left now is to let you know whether or not it's worth bothering going in the first place. Advantages: Looks good from the outside. Fine in you like art this much. Disadvantages: Boring.. Boring.. Boring.. (sorry but it was)
The Guggenheim museum in NYC is situated by the east side of Central Park, that is 5th Ave, on 89th st.
When I went to new york last year, we arrived late on saturday, so Sunday was the first day in which to explore the city. After picking up lots of leaflets and a virgin city guide book, we decided to head to central park first, then bloomingdales, then onto the Guggenheim museum. These were all situated relatively near to each other.
The museum ... ...building being the main part of this modern architectural building. It is more of an Art gallery than a museum.
For those Art lovers out there I'm sure you would have a great time looking at all the picasso and other artists (none I've heard of!). But for me it was so boring... a complete waste of a couple of hours.
We paid about $10 each to get in so we had to try and get something out of the visit. I recommend getting the elevator to the top ...

Advantages: Great collection of surrealist and cubist works Disadvantages: Can get very hot and crowded
...or haven't been. Definately worth wandering around though.
There is a cafe, but we didn't bother, it was far too expensive! There is a small gift shop as well, again fairly pricey, selling the usual art gallery stuff: postcards, books, posters, general souvenirs. There is another larger gift shop outside the site, so you can buy books and postcards without actually going to visit the collection. It's the same price and the same stuff. In fact, because it is bigger they actually have more things to buy here than in the smaller one.
I have never been to any other Guggenheimmuseums (there is one in Spain, one in Berlin and two in Manhattan, together forming the SolomonR. Guggenheim Foundation), but having seen this one I think I would like to if I had the chance. If you have no interest whatsoever in art, then to be honest, you won't find...
