Someplace Else Guest House, Johannesburg

Advantages: location OK
Disadvantages: poor condition, manager a serious problem

...We booked several nights for a group while working on a project in one of the townships. We wanted someplace safe and not too rowdy, although members of our group are reasonably tolerant and some have traveled widely with primitive accomodations. The outside facilities are pretty, but inside there are unattached floorboards, rooms lit be a single low-illumination bare bulb, plumbing that does not work, and questionable wiring. Worst was the manager, who drank heavily much of the time (as did his assistant), made lewd comments to women, and occasionally spoke in an abusive manner. There was much coming and going by people who were not "guests." On the last night before we left, someone knocked on the door of the two youngest in our group three times, and passed out on the floor after the last time. Eventually, it was not clear if we were... ...Sandton you will find alot of great places to eat and bars many of these can be found in Sandton Square which is located next to Sandton City shopping centre. From Pizzerias to fish to Grill houses you wont be short of choice. To give you an idea of a meal, we decided to go to The Meat Company in Monte Casino (which is about 20 minutes drive from Sandton), We ordered two bottles of wine and a bottle of water, all of us had a main course of rump steaks, fillets etc including a service charge this came to roughly just under £60 (and this is a top notch steak house and the wine was £20 a bottle). One thing I can promise is there is no shortage of good food in Johannesburg so bring a very big empty stomach! ..., she said, “Well, if you don’t like it you can try to rent another room someplace else”. In NYC---at the last minute---I don’t think so! She offered to send up a rollaway bed and said, “take it or leave it”. So, I took it. I don’t know if it’s just me, but at $250.00 a night a “cot” is not my idea of my money’s worth. There was no bellhop. When I arrived upstairs, there was a lovely chaise lounge in the room. I opted to sleep on it and cancelled the rollaway bed. The room had a mini-bar (high-priced) and web-TV. The décor was an interesting modern Mediterranean. The bath amenities were excellent. During our stay, a taxicab door bashed into my too-tall travelling companion’s head.
