On my recent visit to Somerset a county in the south west of England this is what I did.
Just south of Bristol along the M5 lies a natural boundary called the Mendip hills. If you go through the hills you are in Somerset. The hills themselves provide glorious walks in both the winter and the summer. There are magnificent views and on clear days you can see for miles around. Looking south west you get magnificent views of the Somerset levels and Sedge more. This was host to a battle in the Civil war. Also deep within the hills is one of the U.Ks foremost pot holing and caving areas. There are commercial caves to visit at Cheddar famous for its Gorge and Woo key Hole; witch is a huge underground cave system. Doctor who was once filmed there.
Moving along we come to the Cathedral city of Wells. With its awesome cathedral it's the smallest city in England to have a Cathedral. The town itself is famous for the cathedral choir. During the month of November, Wells along with other places in Somerset hosts one of the most spectacular night time carnivals. 40ft floats powered by industrial generators travel a circuit of the town with bright lights and sometimes loud music and dancing in cases and tableaus in others. This is a breathtaking sight and is brilliant fun.
Traveling along the A39 we come to Glastonbury, with its ruined abbey and the ancient Tor, and Wyrall hill, the resting place of Joseph Aramather. Glastonbury is one of the mysterious centers of England. It is aid the lady of the lake rests and gave King Arthur the sword Excalibur near to Glastonbury, Arthur himself is said to be buried at Glastonbury abbey. The church in Glastonbury has the Christmas flowering thorn, which is reputed to have come from the staff of Joseph. On the outskirts we have the Chalice well which has healing powers. Next to the well raises the Tor the remains of a medieval church destroyed by an earth quake.
The next town we come to is the Clarks town of Street. Famous for the Clarks shoes which originated in Somerset, that’s why the have a symbol of Glastonbury Tor on the bottom of them. Most lately the Street has had Clark’s village built there. There are loads of shops there and it's the main tourist attraction of Street and brings in allot of money.
Following the A39 further we come to Sedge more and the Somerset levels. Birrow Bridge has another ruined church. A short distance along we come to the place where Alfred burnt the Gales. A brief rest more before we move into the county capital of Taunton. Hear we find the head glarier of the Somerset county cricket club. A bustling town, with regular cattle markets.
Among the North West we come to the natural pack of Exmore.
We finally come to the North of Somerset coast with the towns of Mine head, Weston super mare and Burnham-on-sea- and the stunning coast line.
Another town to note is Bath. Named after the roman baths that are there, they are filled of naturally heated mineral water. Yeovil hosts the naval air station of Yeovilton.
The Somerset countryside is diverse with hills fens and levels. The country is renowned for the cider and cheese and more lately wine. There are a number of strange listens related to cider making one of the strangest is wisely. The apple trees drive off evils sprits. Farmers make loud sounds around apple trees mainly loud noises to ensure good crop. Somerset is generally viewed from the motor way and as such a wonderful rich diverse county full of interesting villages, mystical towns, loads of history and town is often passed by with only a brief mention.
